As as Virginian, I humbly apologize for my state's complete lack of common sense and ability to live in the 21st century.

To all the women who helped put McDonnell in office: enjoy serving under a man who doesn't think you deserve equal pay for equal work, who thinks gays don't deserve equal protection under the law, and who thinks you don't deserve the right to your own uterus, even in cases of rape and incest.

Way to go, Virginia. You fucking suck. I am embarassed. #gawkerdecisiondesk

I'd like to see what a model of INefficiency looks like, Peter. what a joke. resounding vote of no confidence in Bloomberg. if he cares whatsoever about New York, he should step down. if not, Seabrook '13! and for all of you who voted Bloomberg, just because: shame on you. what could have been. #gawkerdecisiondesk

@Peter Feld: or maybe we should just stop celebrating the influence of money in politics, and thus encouraging it. you make your arguments with an effective briskness, Peter, I just happen to feel your viewpoint evinces a selective memory, or at least, and in that case more dismayingly, a willingness to overlook certain aspects of this man's record that suggests you're part of the smug and complacent demographic that I believe this ambitious and occasionally efficacious, but ultimately self serving man relies on with impunity. #gawkerdecisiondesk

@TheologicalSong: Ouch but I think my views are more nuanced than that. I am not exactly celebrating the influence of money, and I'm not really sure how much Bloomberg got for his spending. I've said elsewhere the main thing driving his reelection was generally high job approval ratings, which isn't the same thing as saying I approve of everything he's done (though I think his accomplishments -- in public health and urban planning alone -- are significant). #gawkerdecisiondesk

@Peter Feld: well, Peter, as we know, the Internet tends to nullify the unspoken communication, the body language, the semaphoric, if you will, physicality that leavens, softens, lends conversational effervescence to what might appear to be uncomfortably blunt/brusque sweeping broad brush type generalizations when viewed online. that is to say, when I say we should stop celebrating, I'm speaking expansively, macrocosmically, not of you personally, necessarily. I'm decrying societal tendency, not castigating you. similarly, when I call out a smug and complacent demographic that you MAY be part of, I'm speaking of that collective group, not singling you out. in other words, though we may disagree, I don't intend to offend. I do so respectfully. certainly you express your views with cogency and elegance. anyway, cheers to vigorous debate, succinct though this one may be! #gawkerdecisiondesk

methinks bloomberg would have won by a much larger margin had he donated the $85 mil or whatever exorbitant amount it was he spent on his campaign to nyc charities and ran on his reputation. i would have at least gone out and voted then. til that day comes...fuck em. #gawkerdecisiondesk

On Larry King just now, Jesse Ventura, the Norm Crosby of politics, just mangled the adage that if all civil rights acts were decided by the people, we'd still have segregation in some states. He took it as far as "we'd still have slavery, depending on how you worded it."

Ironically, he was speaking in favor of the same-sex marriage initiative in ME, which is currently in danger of being repealed 52-48%. #gawkerdecisiondesk

@unclevanya: I'll excuse Jesse Ventura for a slip of the tongue like that and, in fact, I agree with the gist of what he's saying. My respect for him was cemented when he scared that little cretin, Brian Kilmeade, off the Fox & Friends set during an interview. Jesse looks like he's using every last bit of restraint to hold back from clotheslining the dipshit. #gawkerdecisiondesk

    re: bloomie's huge spending spree.

I didn't pay too much attention to pre-election polling but if Mike had such a high approval rating, and presumably expected a comfortable margin of victory going into the race, then he wouldn't have had to pay out the ass for barely a win, right? Peter, I think your speculation that voters were turned off by the all the money is a valid one.

@Helio: Honestly, it's really hard to know. One generally thinks that voters don't care one way or the other about campaign tactics as an issue. But in an election like this with ultra-low turnout, the electorate is not "normal" -- it's dominated by people who could be considered political diehards. And they very well might have hated all the spending, especially since they are the ones who got all the phone calls and mail (calls and mail in a race like this are targeted toward people who vote every time.) #gawkerdecisiondesk
