This is one case where I wish the US were a little more like the Roman Republic. Back in the day, if you killed a Roman citizen you were likely to find your country under new management shortly thereafter.

Sooner or later, we're probably going to have to "explain" it to them anyway.

@El Matardillo: This is the nuclear age. Things aren't that simple. Also, like Rome, the US isn't going to be on top forever. It's already practically owned by China it is so in debt to them. It's probably not a good idea to make other nations THAT resentful of the US and to set that sort of precedent.

Re these wars and what the US is capable of dealing with: these wars show war and international affairs are complicated. War is also very expensive. Yeah, the US has a big weapons stockpile and military but there is a big problem with finding an end game that results in the US not being totally weakened from depleted resources and in the invaded country being more stable and US-friendly than before. Also, eventually the world community would move against an America so highhanded it imprisons, tortures and kills other nation's citizens at will but attacks any country with the nerve to kill one of its citizens for any reason.

Here's where the disadvantage of surrendering the moral high ground comes in. I'd be a lot more sympathetic to the domestic cause were we not in the very midst of yet another foreign prison scandal. It's difficult to claim that this is morally wrong according to American standards when equivalently despicable detainment and imprisonment are being employed by our leaders in Guantanamo Bay, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. Now it has endangered Laura Ling.

@Unsolicited Advice: I agree. People were being held and tortured in Iraqi prisons who had just been randomly rounded up in sweeps. They were more innocent than these two women. There were innocent people like the Canadian guy and German guy who were grabbed and tortured in US prisons without trial. There hasn't been real accountability for this stuff. Who is the US at this point to complain about a country imprisoning their citizens after an actual law violation?

These women illegally entered the country!! They broke the laws of North Korea. Why should anybody in the US government put their noses into this? I say, let them do whatever time the North Koreans sentence them to do. They broke the law and it's none of our business!! If one of them wasn't the sister of a moderately famous person, this thing wouldn't have gotten any press in the first place. Leave it alone. It's not important enough to get the North Koreans riled up. Leave it be.

The Ling and Lee families are smart to ask the govt's to keep this issue separate from Pyongyang's power moves, but I don't think it will work. June 4th is already next week. These girls are gonna do time there.
