    To me, PETA is much like Michael Moore. Hearts are in the right place, but technique is completely ineffective. I'm on their side, and I ignore them -- they're definitely not winning any converts on the other side. (Which should be their point, right?)

    I always get Peter Singer and Pete Seeger mixed up. I once went to an event hoping to hear "Wimoweh" only to find myself pondering the question of whether pouring a blastocyst down the drain of a laboratory sink at a fertility center is abortion. The weed didn't help my pondering; all I wanted was "Wimoweh."

    PETA directly funds terrorist groups that destroy property and research facilities. When research on human MTC (mother-to-child) transmission of HIV was under way and the research center was destroyed, research came to a halt and children died of AIDS. That is a direct cause and effect, people, not theory.

    @BookishLookish: I guess it's still hearsay because I can't remember the source, but I saw a TV show about a similar thing. Peta had paid for the legal defense of a man accused of firebombing research facilities at, I think, University of Michigan. I can't remember what they were researching, but they were testing on animals.

    @BookishLookish: Huh. My understanding is that the first known action by the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) was to liberate monkeys held by PETA that PETA was going to return in order to ensure the prosecution of a researcher. So it seems like the ALF and PETA are distinctly at odds.
