Well, they don't - in the house. That's why the house exists.
The senate exists to protect the autonomy of the states. There is a perfectly valid argument that asks "why should my state have to submit to your state's will just because we happen to have fewer people?" That's kind of why we fought a revolution to begin with - inequality in various laws governing territories of the kingdom, with the larger and more established territories dictating everything to the smaller and newer territories. If the bigger states have all the power over the smaller states, then they will abuse that power. This is especially true in a country like ours, where the smaller states population-wise happen to have the vast majority of our natural resources. (On the other hand, they also have most of our weapons.) #congress

591,833 people live in Washington DC, and we don't have any voting representation in the Senate or House!

It only bans federal funding for elective abortions. I personally don't have a problem with that ban. Abortion is a choice, and with that choice comes personal responsibility, and the financial responsibility for that decision, in a majority of cases, shouldn't fall on the federal government.
But I'm a dude, so I should probably just shut the hell up. #congress

The point I was making, maybe not clearly enough, was that this is what happens when our illustrious Congress gets involved in our health care. But that's how our system is built, for better or for worse. #congress

Maybe abortion is just a personal choice (I actually think it's a necessary part of real medical care, but whatever). Really, when 70,000 women across the world die each year because they don't have access to safe and legal abortions, don't we have some responsibility to ensure that we don't add to that number?

This is the problem with health care in this country. It also points to a pretty easy solution. Vote against the people who rake in their campaign contributions from the people who want to rape you out of decent, affordable health care.

You know what those dollar figures say to me? These senators are incredibly cheap whores. Seriously. They can steer multi-billion dollar legislation for less than $250,000 per year per senator. Fucking brilliant/evil.

Yeah, only they're not low end street hookers. The members of Congress operate like a high-class prostitution ring willing to perform any act for any customer who's willing to pay well for it. Money on the table first...show them the bucks and let the action begin.

"Health-related companies and their employees gave Baucus's political committees nearly $1.5 million in 2007 and 2008, when he began holding hearings and making preparations for this year's reform debate.
Top health executives and lobbyists have continued to flock to the senator's often extravagant fundraising events in recent months. During a Senate break in late June, for example, Baucus held his 10th annual fly-fishing and golfing weekend in Big Sky, Mont., for a minimum donation of $2,500. Later this month comes "Camp Baucus," a "trip for the whole family" that adds horseback riding and hiking to the list of activities.
To avoid any appearance of favoritism, his aides say, Baucus quietly began refusing contributions from health-care political action committees after June 1. But the policy does not apply to lobbyists or corporate executives, who continued to make donations, disclosure records show. "

I'm sure that will happen when hell freezes over - but one can dream, right?

And you know, when the opponents are dismissing those without insurance, you list several types entrepreneurs or small businesspeople and I can't help but think of others, who either don't venture out because of the benefits or whose spouse keeps a job they don't like, so the family can stay above ground.

A strong public option could negotiate with healthcare providers for cheaper, 'Bulk' rates;Healthcare providers wouldn't waste money on a long , inefficient process of getting paid, like they do now with private insurers, thus lowering your healthcare bill;
A strong public option with universal coverage would send insured people to the doctor, instead of uninsured people who are already there at taxpayer expense;
A strong public option does not need to pay shareholders, bonuses and fees for fat cat CEOs, advertise on television, or build fancy corporate headquarters. Nor would it need to donate so heavily on Congressional lobbying.
I could go on....
