    While Caroline has an incredibly annoying speech pattern I do think she's very bright and as qualified as anyone else based solely on intellect. It's the glad handing and schmoozing she needs help with. Oh, and the lack of dues paying and previous holding of elective office.


    I know we're not supposed to comment on anyone's looks here or the Jezzies will get us, but my old Irish grandfather used to call her "beautiful in the cradle ugly at the table", which is some weird old timey saying in his arsenal. Personally, I think she's still cute.

    @gladys_kravitz: How do we know she's bright? We know she's well educated and we know that her family background gave her a legacy admission but she hasn't even spoken in remote detail on policy like her cousins (RFK Jr, Kerry, Patrick) have in the public.

    @Cord: You're right about not knowing her feelings on policy but she has to have better than average smarts to pass the NYS bar exam on the first try. That's not something that one can get a pass on based on one's family name. How many times did the Post headline say The Hunk Flunks about her brother?

    @gladys_kravitz: Not really. I've known some dumbass attorneys who managed to pass the NY bar on the first try. Test taking ability and a smart bar/bri buddy don't equal above average intelligence.

If your father had been murdered in public, and the film of that murder & your mother's traumatic reaction shown more than any other piece of film footage in the world .... [fill in lots of other uniquely unpleasant conditions of CK's early life] you would deserve a lot more respect and kindness than Gawker gives you here. Grow up guys, money isn't everything.

    Since her announcement, I've noticed that the most unflattering photos of CKS have emerged. I keep wondering if the author(s) HAVE to write about her because it's news, but they resent it, so they throw in the most hideous photo they can find.

    Pareene, how did you come to the conclusion that she is unqualified? What exactly are the requirements for being senator other than being over age 30, a citizen, and an inhabitant of the state?

    She is a member of a powerful political family and a lawyer. Just like Hillary Clinton was before she became a NY senator. Do you also think Hillary was also unqualified for the position?

    @OwenKlient: Hillary actually articulated her views and stands on issues, and won it in an election. I didn't vote her (and probably never will), but I do respect that she won her job, and didn't just have it handed to her by some starstruck politician.

    @The One: Anyone who Paterson appoints will have the job handed to them. No one will actually have to campaign for the job, or rather, will only have to campaign to Paterson. If doddering old men and wives of dead senators can faithfully execute the responsibilities of the position, I'm sure Caroline can do just as well, or just as bad as they can, at least for the next 2 years.

    To me, the difference between Caroline Kennedy and the others who want the appointment is that the others have all run for office, put their views out there and earned the offices they have now (or have had).


    She's inarticulate and has yet to tell us where she stands on any issues, other than mumbling something about agreeing with Obama.

    So Basil Paterson's son will probably end up appointing Mario Cuomo's kid instead of Jack Kennedy's daughter to the Senate seat being vacated by Bill Clinton's wife, which was once held by Ted Kennedy's brother.
