The sea of 40-somethings around me just called the 9.4% unemployment rate "the Obama effect".
Truly a wondrous creature this animal who believes being republican imparts a higher social standing. The elitist finger pointing is going the wrong way. You are Rebublican because your mostly uneducated parents thought it made them upper-classy to be so.

If you were a real conservative, and not merely a frustrated hypocrite, you would appreciate Jon's taking the jabs based on merit, as opposed to based on some commie idea that everyone should be treated equally, no matter their mental disabilities.

The other problem is the frequent appearances of Ann Coulter.

Seriously though, no one on Fawx Red Eye is ever going to be anywhere near as creative, original, or genuinely funny as ANYBODY on The Daily Show.
And seriously Almostbanned, you suck ass. It's so fun coming here to see what zany retarded sound bite you'll come up with. You so silly, man! :D

Jon Stewart, and the relationship he creates with his audience, seem grounded in political hackery.
People in the audience laugh at the bits, and at the video. Their response to Jon Stewart, specifically, is more of a knowing head nod, a "right on, man!", a "you're right, those lying bastards!" response.

Gorbachev ultimately knew that the Soviet Union was all smoke and mirrors by the time he came into power, and realized that a dignified partnership with the Americans would pay dividends in terms of political cover and global prestige once the domino's started to tumble.
Reagan recognized in Gorbachev a willing and trustworthy partner who was genuinely interested in moving the relationship forward, and took advantage accordingly, with great success.
Lets never forget though, that Reagan backed up his formidable diplomacy with the largest military and technological expansion in history, and the absolute willingness to use it. Nobody doubted that he would use force should the need arise, and this gave his diplomatic efforts a sense of legitimacy which Obama will never gain.
Flowery diplomacy without the threat of force to back it up nor a willing partner on the other side of the table has a name: Jimmy Carter.
Reagan was fortunate to have Gorbachev (as well as Thatcher and Pope JPII), for sure. Had he not been there, things would have turned out differently. Obama is following in Carter's footsteps (to our peril), and offering blind olive branches to nobody in particular, backing his words up with nothing, and keeping his fingers crossed that nobody blows us up.

America had something to do with it, yes, but not through it's military might, and most certainly not through something Reagan said to Gorbachev. It helped through it's cultural influence, which came mostly from places like Berkley, Hollywood, Harlem, and Venice Beach. Not the fucking White House, for sure.

I thought it was common knowledge that Soviet Union imploded from within, mostly helped by the idea of a better life coming from the West, and not by Reagen saying "we will really, really, REALLY use our nukes" louder than Carter.

Except that you already did comment on it, by saying it was the spending that did it, and not the "fact" that Gorbachev had no doubt that US would start the nuclear war.
Only, you somehow shot that at me, while you sent all of the kisses to your sweetheart. I am hurt!

If anything the history of US / USSR diplomacy underscores the benefit of conversations with your enemy.

The Daily Show: making Faux News look like assholes since 2000.
thank you Jon.

Not sure that Obama is in the same group as Reagan though. Time will tell.

I'm rooting for Obama because if his economic policies fail, let alone his international ones, our country will be in an even bigger mess than it is now. Then he could be the president that goes down as the worst in history vs its current holder, GWB.

When President Reagan "asked" Gorbachev to tear down this wall, Stewart, it wasn't a diplomatic request to another world leader. It was a demand from the world stage. He knew that after weakening the Soviet Union and the coming of a more moderate leader in Gorbachev, it was time to make this demand. Incidentally, the wall didn't come down until two and a half years after Reagan's speech and during the Bush Administration.
The bottom line is that Russia didn't capitulate because of conversations and speeches. They capitulated because Communism failed. Reagan does get credit for driving their horse until it died.

So that's who armed Taliban, who provided a safe heaven for Bin Laden, who bombed New York and DC?
Fucking awesome, that Reagan!

Incidentally, Obama was an obscure no one when Reagan was President.
