I worked around him and can truly say that Gay was not his agenda. I literally saw breakdowns of audience targets and it was spread across so I do believe him.

The loafers, hmm. My jury's out on those. (Kind of want! Kind of hate!) But here's something one of his friends told me when I was writing about Cohen a while back: "His parents loved him." And that sounds ridiculous but actually it's sort of marvelously key to him. I think he believes the world is a good and kind place and that people are funny and nice, and dishiness and table-flipping is funny but not the sign that people are bad or actually badly deranged. I guess, in short, he is all Anne Frank about things. This is sort of refreshing in the age of the bitchy Internet commenter. It's a good thing!

Though I too wish he'd be a bit less executivey but, you know, whatever, he works for NBC Universal! I'd be uptight too.

Also I wish gay magazines were less gay, but that is asking too much.

The thing that annoys me most about Cohen -- and perhaps the reason why he should stay behind the camera -- is that he is wholly unforthcoming in interviews. He is so guarded, so TV executive-y, and so contrived, that every interview with him reads like a corporate press release from NBC Universal. He is incapable of revealing anything interesting and personal. In other words, he utterly lacks the quality that makes reality TV personalities so compelling.
