I will be horrified if all of my journal entries are deleted or otherwise lost. I've spent the last near decade on LJ and its' a huge important part of my life. I'm with RevHaloFan: How do I backup my lj entries?

@AlexandraNerps: Since I got burned last time I tried to get fancy with links: LJArchive. [fawx.com] Saves comments and has a search function just like the real thing.

LiveJournal, founded by engineer Brad Fitzpatrick in 1999, predated most blogging services and social networks, and anticipated many of their features.

Not to quibble, but I'd say it was the first blogging service.

@RevHalofan: Couple of options here. If you use an external client to update, apparently you can download entries with it (wouldn't know myself).

This one does it month by month: [www.livejournal.com]

And a couple of external options:

@Meiran: Thanks for that. I'll be looking into it since my LJ blog feeds into my own site. Looks like I'll be spending the weekend transferring over my blog. *Sigh*

I knew when Six Apart sold LJ to Moscow (huh?) that it would fall apart. *sigh*

(This is not a slam on France - just pointing out it's not as rosy there as it's often made out to be... somewhat relative. Although, wow, American needs to fix it's house before it falls down around us even more. We've already lost several wings.)

I just got my walking papers on Monday. They did a lot of cuts last week and those were all in the morning. I got laid off at the end of the workday. It was after six years and while it sucks to be let go before the holidays, I am somewhat glad not to work for a disintegrating company any longer.

    JinxyMcDeath,

As an older worker who almost always now works with younger people who are in a position of authority over me, I hope people judge me by my work and not my age. Sadly, the age problem is undeniably there. That said, that woman sounds like unnecessary stress. When someone is short with me I try my best to be professional and realize that they are just under deadlines. I've gotten many rave reviews, they love my work, etc., etc., but I've been unable to actually be hired, only to work freelance. And now, I'm completely out of work. I wish I had the luxury of being a bitch. Have you thought of talking to her one-on-one? If you approach it with a little compassion (for your sake, not hers) you might surprise her in a positive way.

I've never wanted to be anyone's boss, so I don't care what age my supervisors are. Apparently it doesn't matter, really, since at 47 I'm much more childlike than most people are. I'd rather daydream than delegate.

    Again, best of luck, tshirttt.

First story girl, be careful. Because they told you you were "not a good fit" it could be considered a firing for cause, not a layoff. They could very well have done that so they can contest your filing for unemployment compensation.

    Uh, so Happy Thanksgiving!

Both my parents work for Mervyn's Co., which just announced it's closing its doors soon. They're supposed to close completely after December 31st, so for now people still have jobs and at least they got a couple of month's warning. None of the employees, except the managers/supervisors (a category in which my parents thankfully fall in) are getting any kind of severance pay.

Oh yes, and to add insult to injury, they canceled everyone's employee discount.

You think this was scary? You should've been at the Apple hiring process yesterday.

Constantly told how lucky we were to even come in for an interview at such a highly valued and respected company.

As the Apple Retail Store is, mind you.

And by god, if the rest of us didn't kowtow, bow and put on fake smiles about how fucking great the Apple store/community is and gosh darn it we'd love to be a part of it.

Best of all? Second interview. It was a group interview.

And it was Interview #2 of 4.

To work at the goddamn Apple Store. As a cashier.

I mean, fuck. Piss test me and make sure I'm not psychotic. But to demand I explain "Why choose Apple" when there's a goddamn depression and recession going on?

I feel terrible for the people in the story. If it's any consolation, I was pushed out of a magazine job nearly a year ago. Since then, I've been working for wonderful editors at top-notch publications. I have learned so much and have never been happier with my career.

The first time I looked back was couple weeks ago, when I read on Gawker that my former place of employment had just closed.

All these layoff stories are heartbreaking. But at least we live in the Land of the Free, right?

Free to enter the workforce with $100k in student loan debt. Free to remain shackled to a job because your kids need the health care benefits. Free from awful pushy unions. Free from socialized medicine.

Self suffiency! Innovation! Starting your own business! Following your dreams, the pursuit of happiness! Because countries like Denmark, or Ireland, with universal health care and affordable or free higher education, they're not free like we Americans are. Their investing in their citizens' future, which has paid off in spades- that's not freedom!

Free to take a hike when your crap job doesnt need you anymore. Free to pull yourself up by your bootstraps! Free to enjoy the sensation of plunging with no safety net. We're so free, it's all they keep telling us about!

Sorry, dark-hearted rant over. My compassion goes out for everyone having a tough time. Happy Thanksgiving nonetheless, to everyone.

@Baroness: I can assure you things in Ireland aren't good right now either. The minister for health just cancelled plans to provide HPV shots to children to save €6m - a drop in the ocean compared to the disgusting expenses filed by state agencies.

And a good portion of jobs in Ireland are American companies that located over here to take advantage of cheap corporation tax (10%) but are now leaving because our expensive workforce has become too expensive.

@VivianDarkbloom: Still Viv, my point was that a great deal of good comes from young people not being a. crippled by student debt when they start their careers and b. not being enslaved in a crap job by the need for healthcare for their kids or themselves. There's no safety net here- lose you job and healthcare, along comes catastrophic illness and you are fucked. Those were my only points.

Also, I never said that these countries were immune from economic downturn, or layoffs, or any vagaries of the market. Just that the potential for harm is far less on a human level when they occur, health-care wise.

@Baroness: Quite a few Americans I've spoken for are anti-universal healthcare. One even said she'd rather work two jobs than take advantage of free healthcare and she didn't want to pay taxes to subsidise the poor.

@VivianDarkbloom: Well, that's pretty much tragic stupidity, isn't it? If you have to work two jobs, you're poor.

If you're against universal health care out of pure malice, towards your own class, well that's why the Republicans hate the idea of affordable higher education. They need stupid wage slaves to vote against their own interests. Unbelievable.
