    Great post, Richard.
    If a local TV station had the balls to turn The Jay Leno Show into a live Mystery Theater 3000, with silhouettes of snarky commentators ripping the show, it would get a 50 share.

    I remember how my local newscasters sounded very blas'e whenever they tried to read a promo for the Leno show. So far I have only been able to sit through about 5 minutes of it myself. #thejaylenoshow

    What exactly are their options? Can they refuse to show Jay Leno? What would they show instead that would garner better results? Old reruns? Aren't they kind of stuck with what NBC hands them? #thejaylenoshow

    @Island of Misfit Toys: The problem is, what's the incentive for a station to be affiliate of NBC at this point? Sure, showing syndicated repeats in the slot where Jay is wouldn't bring anymore viewers, but at least they'd be making money running ads during those repeats, rather than the cash NBC gets from Leno. #thejaylenoshow

    @MyNameIsChris: I didn't realize that they could remove themselves from NBC. So they could become a CBS channel or ABC...or FOX I guess? Now I see the possibilities. #thejaylenoshow

    @Island of Misfit Toys: Yes, stations can choose alternate programming. In Boston WHDH planned to do 10 PM local newscasts (competing with a highly sucessful Fox affiliate that already does it) but NBC strong armed them out of it. #thejaylenoshow

    @Island of Misfit Toys: NBC has threatened to yank the full affiliation of any station that does not air Jay's show. So a station might be thinking it could come up with its own show in the 10pm spot, but NBC is saying that would be it--they'd get no Office, 30 Rock, Law & Order, etc. #thejaylenoshow

    @Island of Misfit Toys: They could remove themselves from NBC (or, as others have noted, let NBC yank their affiliation)... but that doesn't mean they can become a CBS or Fox channel. Part of the affiliation deal you get is that nobody else will become an affiliate in your market -- and I strongly doubt that the markets in question have an available network affiliation. So the station's choice would be sticking with NBC vs. generating all of their programming through syndication buys; i.e. basically turning into the equivalent of an indy UHF station.

    And a major-market VHF station -- like, say, WHDH -- isn't going to do that. Period. I think the owners would sell the station before voluntarily surrendering a major network affiliation in the absence of a pre-arranged deal to pick up another network affiliation. #thejaylenoshow

    @Dave J.: I'm kind of curious about whether they would do that indiscriminately. I'm in Houston and I wonder if NBC would remove the full affiliation from such a large city/viewership base. Doesn't that hurt them too? But I guess NBC could then jump to one of our local stations that would be grateful to have them... #thejaylenoshow

    There are simple solutions for the affiliates "squirmy days." Just turn their late news broadcasts into scripted shows. For instance imagine a disclaimer appearing at the beginning of the news that reads, "By the end of this broadcast either Chuck or Sue will be dead and it will be up to Janice Huff to catch the killer." Goldmine! #thejaylenoshow
