More importantly, what does this say about the state of South Carolinian women that he had to go all the way to Argentina for a little sumpin' sumpin'?

Welcome to legal marriage. "Partners" instead of husbands or wives start to look like a better alternative when the law gets involved. Family court is really, really painful. I know, and as Bookish said earlier, this guy will probably be in rehab soon.

Um, he also lied to his God. And his marriage vows...

Remember the sanctity of marriage? The reason why Gays aren't worthy to partake? Has that been minimized in this case?

The difference between Sanford and Clinton was that, when Sanford was caught, he copped to it. Clinton looked us all in the face and lied. That's what brought about the impeachment. One thing the Republitards are good at is knowing when to admit guilt.

@Pareene: The key is when the cat got out of the bag he admitted that he was having an affair. Clinton lied and then attempted to cover it up with more lies. For some reason, Christian conservatives don't like that.

Christ, I can't believe I'm, like, defending the guy on some twisted level.

@pepelicious: nah, i'm with you, to a degree. this isn't larry craig or mark foley or newt gingrich levels of publicly condemning what they themselves do in private. sanford seems decent enough, just a little over his head. strange, since he's been in the game for some time now.

Republican Senators from the South are 'off-center and edgy.'

One thing I'd like to say in his favor: he didn't get caught. He just didn't give a shit. Respek.

Condemning Sanford (and Ensign) for their hypocrisy is a no-brainer for me...but should they also be condemned for cheating? Does character matter?

@Mymoustache: Character only matters in theatre and novels. Ironically, in real life, nobody gives a shit if you're one-dimensional.

In reply to Mark Sanford On Cheaters Past: "He Lied Under a Different Oath — The Oath to His Wife"
The bottom line is that I lied. I lied to my wife. I'm sorry for this bottom line. I'm sorry I'm here right now on this bottom line. God's law is there to protect us from ourselves, the selves that end up on the bottom of the bottom of things, just thinking too much about bottoms. The bottom line is that my Argentinian friend started out a friend, but I quickly felt her bottom line. The bottom line is her bottom line was basically an upside down-double arch and that shit is tight. God's law is there to protect us from tightness. It's a bottom line with God. A bottom line that bottom lines shouldn't be contemplated. My wife has a bottom line too, but let's face it, as the line of her lips has tightened over the years, her bottom line has drooped. But I digress. The bottom line here is that things start off innocently, until they're not. You make innocent decisions constantly thinking about an Argentinian bottom line (also a formidable top line) and then all those innocent decisions suddenly somehow and very mysteriously turn into a bad decision. Like one day you're just cuddling in bed watching Gremlins 2, and thinking "oh this is perfectly innocent, my wife would be fine with that" while her bottom line is pressed tightly into the seam of your pants, and then suddenly all bottom lines are out the window.

The bottom line is. Jesus is there to protect us from ourselves.

In his case, it's not being at work (or at least "on call", which I am pretty sure a governor has to be) that's the problem, and not having sex with whomever.
