Johnny Depp is attractive and from all reports is a nice guy (though I don't see why he should get so much credit for not cheating on his wife) but he's a bit too lightweight for my tastes. He's a 'guy' not a 'man'. However, I will always be grateful to Depp for keeping Robert Pattison (whose has managed to keep any trace of attractiveness well hidden from me) off the cover of at least one magazine on the newsstand.

@MessiahsHandle: Totally. If by cheesy you mean weirdly gorgeous. But I can admit his love of Tim Burton and all things therein damages his hawt. Alas my teen soul that had him all over her locker did not care then or now. I'd still take him over Clooney, Pitt, or all those other, "Sexy for no other Godly reason than rite of birth" guys.

i always felt really bad for the absolute nerdiest kid in my junior high whose name was steve mcqueen. to be a total geek is one thing (and as a sidenote he had NO chance of becoming a swan later on), but to be named after one of the sexiest, coolest men alive only invited constant comparison/contrast by classmates and teachers.

@snugbug: They are both handsome in that classic sense, and do resemble each other strongly- also Cary Grant, except he had a little more pronounced cleft in his chin. And he seemed like he'd always have you laughing. All three were swoony.

@Uncle_Billy_Slumming: Oh.. So unexpected! I fully agree with the Sidney Poitier and Gary Cooper love, but in my mind I always diagrammed you as a Bogey man. Talk about straight-from-the ice-box cool.. No one would ever accuse Humphrey Bogart of being good-looking, but by Lord, what a sexy presence he had!

I'm a demented Raymond Chandler fan, and in my mind's eye, Bogey IS Philip Marlowe. Whenever I re-read those cherished books, I hear Bogart's phlegmatic, sarcastic voice in my head.

@snugbug: I loves me some Mitchum, but I don't know that he'd be categorized as a 'gentleman' per se. Apparently he was one of the great bad boys of Hollywood. Did a brief stint in the joint--in the late 40s!--for pot possession. Which, naturally, makes him all the more delicious.

Can't get worked up about a guy who refused to let Ali McGraw have a life. And he was a fairly limited actor.

I'll watch almost anything Johnny Depp is in. He's that good. McQueen? The Great Escape, and how many times can I watch him bounce that damn ball against the wall.

This is no knock on the lovely Steve McQueen, but c'mon: Clint Eastwood from "The Man with No Name" era through "Dirty Harry"?

That laconic, squinty, stoic visage of his is the textbook definition of sexy. I actually still find him attractive, even at the ripe age of 128, or however old he is nowadays.
