A valve replacement is relatively benign as heart surgery goes. My dad had it done about 30 years ago, when surgical techniques were a lot less advanced than they are now, and he's lived a completely normal life ever since. He's now in his 70's. The surgery itself was supposedly no fun and I'm sure it's still not today, but Williams' long-term prognosis should be good. This isn't something like heart failure where the guy needs a transplant and will be lucky to live another 2 years even if he gets one. Once you get that valve replaced, you're "cured".
