When I was in England during the summer of 1978, "Brown Girl In the Ring" by a band called Boney-M was No. 2 on the charts. It was perhaps the most irritating synth-pop song I've ever heard, and you couldn't escape hearing it wherever you went.
When I got home to the U.S., I never heard it again.
But thanks to the wonders of Youtube, YOU can hear it NOW! (Warning: You will not get it out of your head for at least a week.)
@MisterHippity: Wowza. One of my earliest memories is my aunt singing that to me. She had the 7". That and The Frog Song by Paul McCartney were my first musical experiences.
Every opera student should be made to watch Streep’s rendition of "The Winner Takes It All." It is a model of how to act and sing. That the song is repetitive melodrama with silly lyrics makes the comparison all the more germane.
It failed my Delta review method; watching it without sound on a flight because the earphone jack doesn't work. And that Eddie Murphey "I'm a tiny alien inside a big robotic head" movie got a C-.
@Itsjustcatnip: I watched it WITH sound on a Delta flight 3 weeks ago and it was legitimately excruciating. I'm not exactly a film critic (Newsies is in my VCR right now), but this was truly bad.
I've had three roundtrips to the UK in the last few months as well as a few domestics, and while this movie is playing on approximately every plane in the entire world right now, only on the flights from England do people SING ALONG.
The musical opened up there first so it's probably a little excitement that something British born got remade and then back again. Also, big British stars are in it.
Last but not least. All things ABBA are awesome. That's it and that's all.
@hydeordie: It's the Julie Walters factor. I think of the ten top grossing British films, she is in six of them. However, someone with actual research skills will have to confirm that...
Clearly, Richard, you have not seen this movie drunk in a screening room full of catty but sentimental Hollywood gays. I would rate it as one of my top 3 movie experiences of the year. (Seriously.) Are we not allowed to appreciate the fact that Meryl Streep has moved on to high camp and it's every bit as magical as it sounds?

Real tears.
I have not seen this film and I never will.
I should probably hand my passport in now.

Besides, it is set in a sunny Greek island and all Brits hope eventually to move to a sunny Greek island.
