"we highlighted a scary county-by-county map that a commenter posted"
I thought I posted the link to the time-lapse spread of unemployment. It was a NYT multimedia thingamabob using the same graphic. Either way, the commenter has a name.
Hmm. The fattest people, the worst unemployment- all in the Bible Belt, the area ruled most consistently and solidly by the teabagging Republicans. Perhaps there's a case to be made that THEY SHOULDN'T RUN THE COUNTRY?
I'm almost scared what data like this could be used for. Jobs eating and drinking things?! Beverage sociologists? Meat Mensa candidates?! Carnivore vs. Herbivore gladiator battles? Milkshake sip-offs? Payment for work in pulled pork?
I predict bad, bad, days ahead. Just wait until they invent that Star Trek Food Replicator.
Doesn't disregarding the ENTIRE West Coast throw off the theory? I know that statistics in journalism = shaping the numbers to suit the needs of your story, but c'mon.
The 'grain belt' states in the midwest/ west (nebraska, colorado, oklahoma and kansas) have high obesity but low unemployment. The leading cause of obesity is related to the overuse of high fructose corn syrup... The US needs to stop subsidizing grain farmers and start subsidizing fruit and vegetable farmers.
I would think if it were me, I'd have more time to hit the gym. The problem is, I'd also have more time to indulge in those things that make people fat, like snack food, alcohol, and television.
@ambitious: Good points, all. Touche. Thing is, I also have to deal with the wife, and that would have me out of the house finding something - anything - to do besides sitting around looking like a lazy sack of shit so she could scream at me for being a lazy sack of shit. Depression or no.
@PaisleyPajamas: Friends who live in Colorado tell me that they love going to other parts of the country because even a chubby Coloradoan is average or thinner pretty much anywhere else.
Allegheny County, PA, home of Pittsburgh and employed and thin me, has low unemployment and low obesity — though it is an island hemmed in by girth and sloth.

Naw, goetz posted the same graphic from another source. My point was, though, that whether it was goetz or not, the commenter has a name.

The climate is sublime--dry, super sunny and relatively cool. Perfect for outdoor sports.
