Isn't it interesting that with all the missteps, Yahoo's digital home or TV Widgets or whatever they're calling it these days is still, more or less, intact, even though they've not done much?
DFW programmers always get a good laugh at the idea of Cuban being some sort of coding visionary.. He lucked out with an awesome domain name and a set of balls in the right place at the right time. When they label him as a "dot com billionaire", it really is just that.. he had a great .com.
Why does Gawker's tech editor hate the tech industry? It seems like whenever Owen starts writing rather than reporting news it's about how we should hate the tech industry or someone is far more successful than he or she deserves (see Marissa Mayer). It started out tawdry and now it's boring and predictable as well.
@kinchknifeblade: Tech industry? You mean tumblr, pop17 etc? That is called web 2.0 bubble, just like dotcom bubble. Real tech innovations are done at companies like HP, Apple, Cisco and countless others. This web 2.0 bubble built on venture capitalist money hoping to cash out when some Google, yahoo or microsoft would buy them; can't be called tech industry. And, that is the reason valleywag editors hate it.
heh, I get to live in Austin every day, and let me tell you, the locals are happy when these bozos go home. Please tip your waitstaff well, and then plase leave!
@bigduke: I know a lot of locals who love South By, so this comment makes me think you're the type of idiot who lives in a city, but can't stand when the city doesn't work for you about 3-4 weeks a year. I know it causes gridlock on the streets, but if it bothers you this much, move to Houston - nothing will bother you there.
@The Human Tornado: I love SXSW, ACL Fest, and all the other things that bring people to town. Purple sweaters and all! I love the geeks, the movie people, the music people, the bikers, the rodeo people, the football people, even (begrudgingly) the legislators. Thank you for coming.
Perhaps you'd like to purchase some real estate while you're here? I'm shameless and I DON'T CARE.
@apocalypse-nowish: Could be. I've never seen any locals anywhere in Texas drink Lone Star but admittedly I haven't been everywhere in the state (254 counties!). Maybe it's also generational.
I betcha you actually know how to say Bexar County, with kin in San Antone.
@Louisa Lee: Lordy, I swear only people who come to town and want "authentic" Texas experiences drink Lone Star in my presence. Little did I know everyone's grandpa is a secret Lone Star drinker. He brings out the good whisky when I come callin'.

and, unlike the banksters, it's not us govt funding that's paying for it
investors want to pay for parties, people like parties, people go to parties ...
also, tech is iterative. breakthru, iteration iteration iteration, breakthru
the year after the iphone came out, every hot new app looked like the iphone ... til the next new thing
