I do think it's odd that in a time in which increasing numbers of black women are trying to wear their hair natural that so many of these black Barbies have straight hair.

But more troubling to me is most of the clothes. They're incredibly "ghetto." What happened to aspiration? Just because you're poor doesn't mean you want a doll that looks exactly like you (supposedly). The Cinderella doll comes dressed in a gossamer ball gown, not in rags.

I'm no Barbie aficionada; was there a "White Trash" Barbie? These then, would be the black counterpart.

These Barbies are "more horrible." White Barbie gets a convertible and a house in Malibu. Some of these black Barbies look destined for their very own street corner.

For the first few seconds I th0ught the "Shiny Bubbles" commercial was mildly amusing -- I read too quickly and thought it was a sponsored ad leading in to the main item -- but as the bubbles' remarks began to escalate into a group taunt it was scary. How could the makers not realize that this was going too far and evoked a rape scene?

Advertising and the movies love the image of the beautiful, helpless, naked woman on the brink of being assaulted, sexually or with a knife (Psycho). I can't think of a similar image of a man.

Adding insult to injury, after the soap scum raped her, she sat for an hour in the shower, crying as the water poured over her.

If it were a real black barbie doll, there's no way in hell she would let you touch her hair.

That commercial doesn't contain anything that doesn't go on at during halftime at a Jets game.

It could be worse. Mattell initially wanted to charge 3/5ths of the price of a white Barbie doll.

@econdave: I was in the spice aisle at the grocery store when I noticed that white pepper costs more than ten times as much as black pepper.

Those dolls are black? I thought they were part of the Orange County Barbie series that come with their very own spray tan booths.

I once jumped into a shallow tub and got sexually assaulted by a bar of Lifebuoy soap, so you never know.

The doll thing actually does make me sad, b/c I had an awesome black Barbie when I was a kid, with much darker skin and curlier hair than any of those dolls have. My best friend still says that when we were kids and didn't actually like each other, the fact that I had a black Barbie is the only thing about me she thought was cool.
