"So, Mr. Spielberg, is it true that you have horns?"
"What do you mean, you don't want to answer that question? Do you or do you not have horns? Because I've heard that Jews have them."
"Look, I'm only asking as a journalist here. And since I'm talking to you in a calm voice, nothing I say should be considered offensive to you."
"Wait! Where are you going?"
"What a whack job." #scientology
@Mediahohoho: I'm an atheist, actually. I just fail to understand why a Jew wouldn't be offended by a journalist seriously asking a question about horns.
I know practically nothing about Scientology, but if that's an appropriate analogy (meaning that Scientologists' literal belief in the aliens/volcanos scenario is myth based on hatred just as Jews having horns is), then I can certainly understand why the guy walked out on the interview.
Of course, maybe it's just a really crappy analogy and the guy that walked out is a nutjob for other reasons. #scientology
@sweetbeans: We're talking about a church leader and the church's beliefs here. A better analogy would be: "So, Thomas Monson, do you believe that God lives on a star near the planet Kolob? Do you believe that God changed his mind about black people in 1978?" #scientology
@PontiusPirate: See, that's the thing. Assuming that Scientologists do believe in the alien/volcano scenario, then that would be the better analogy. Although, maybe like LDS, the crazier parts of the church's early mythology are being phased out, and members don't actually believe in them anymore. Just as many Christians probably don't believe that the earth was literally created in a week, Jesus-horses or not. #scientology
@sweetbeans: Well, that was my point. Horns on the head is an observable phenomenon. The wife of the religion's founder giving birth to a son at the age of 90, on the other hand, is a matter of the religion's mythology. Ditto the one about a teenage virgin being impregnated by God in the form of an angel. We could go on. To me, what makes this video so compelling is the outrage being generated in order to deny this religion's mythology. To me, that just signals cult, probably more than anything else about Scientology. #scientology
The time for legitimizing Scientologists by giving them any media forum--even while ridiculing their insanity--should stop. They thrive on attention and "celebrity" like star-struck 13-year old girls at a Hannah Montana show. If we--and all forms of media--just ignore them, they will go away. I for one am sick and tired of reading about them and their collective delusions. #scientology
@Tattertotter: Nah. Sunshine is the best disinfectant. The more the Co$ is scrutinized and revealed publicly as a greedy and dehumanizing organization based on the nearly psychotic ramblings of a second-rate Science Fiction writer the less likely any other people will end up like Lisa McPherson.
Sincerely,
Your friendly neighborhood SP #scientology
@NickelMD: But, doc, if people haven't gotten the message about Scientology over the last 30 years then They Never Will. Does that mean that we secular humanists should allow ourselves to be assaulted by their bullshit over and over and over? There comes a point when you just have to protect yourself from the Chinese water-torture of not just Scientology (which isn't of course a religion to anyone but the IRS) but all organized fantasies trying to keep humans believing in redemption, resurrection, afterlife, prayer, dogma, sacred texts, etc. etc. etc. OK, rant over, soapbox carefully packed away in garage. #scientology
@Tattertotter: I think that it is this coverage , the blogs, youtube, their inaptness at handling bad publicity/ which usually creates more bad publicity for them, and also Tom & Tommy has done more to expose them then anything else. The leadership is crazy and they know exactly what they are doing, but the people in this cult and those who are vulnerable to this cult need this information. I know there has been a lot of on Scientology lately but I don;t think they like it one bit. The Tom/Brooks Shields fight sort of made people who were previously unaware of them look more closely. I think this type of heat is just what they need #scientology
@Tattertotter: "But, doc, if people haven't gotten the message about Scientology over the last 30 years then They Never Will."
And we'll never have gay marriage, universal health insurance, and a black man in the white house.
If nothing else, the endless September was barely a decade and a half ago. And while the Co$ is declining in membership despite their claims otherwise, we (non-theists) are growing in numbers.
"There comes a point when you just have to protect yourself from the Chinese water-torture of not just Scientology... but all organized fantasies trying to keep humans believing in redemption, resurrection, afterlife, prayer, dogma, sacred texts, etc. "
We can want to not be annoyed by them, but you gotta let 'em talk. Ridicule is the way to combat them, not depriving them of speech. #scientology
Religion? No.
Cult? Uhuh.
And that man is gayer than a Christmas tree. And a defensive little snit too. Seems that they often throw hissy fiits whenever they have to explain their cretinous beliefs. Time they were thoroughly investigaged by the department of Justice in relation to their tax status as a "religion" and their treatment of adherents.
What happened to David Miscavidge, I thought he was the COS spokesbot? That guy would have had the most perfectly-worded doublespeak answer for Bashir, and perhaps even have converted him into a membership by the time the interview was over, he's that goddamned good of a speaker.
This guy... he's probably just an OT III newb. A mere pussy on the Bridge to Total Freedomâ„¢! #scientology
Srsly tho...getting back to whether or not Jews have horns? My sometimes boyfriend is Jewish and I can tell you this much: he doesn't have horns but he has something that I sure as heck love to blow. just sayin'... #scientology
@Moff: I wouldn't necessarily say that, but, as an atheist, it does appear that for some reason, they found a need to believe in something completely ridiculous (some form of god) and let that guide their morals for them.
I can do all things through delusion, which strengtheneth me. #scientology
@Victor Ward: Or perhaps they simply weren't egomaniacal, arrogant, intolerant jerks.
This type of comment, this right here, is why religious people assume that all atheists are sociopathic monsters. "My beliefs are the only true ones, and everyone else is an idiot" sounds awfully similar to "you don't deserve to be thought of as human because I am the epitome of creation". #scientology
@ArdelisDeeson: I may be a sociopathic monster, but at least I wasn't responsible for The Crusades!
Haha, but you sure put an awful lot of words in my mouth. My opinion that people who buy into deity based beliefs are a little ridiculous in no way says that my beliefs are the only true ones (though maybe the only factual ones!), nor did my comment in any way dehumanize members of organized religion. Just made fun of them! Take a non-scientology approved mood stabilizer and calm down. #scientology
why, if scientology has so many homophobic leanings, than why is it that so many of their members are G-A-Y?!? this is worse than the politicians on "outrage". smdh. #scientology
Also, wouldn't most people who follow a religion (Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, etc) be able to address their beliefs in the most basic, general way without getting offended, etc? #scientology
Tom Cruise has what my mother calls a "dead-behind-the-eyes" thing going on. He smiles and laughs but it's like a really fake, intense friendliness. His laugh is so maniacal and forced. Will Smith has that going on too. He smiles and laughs hard but his eyes are spaced out and hallow. Scary stuff. Plus, Tommy, Tommy and Will all give off the gay vibe.
I am so glad you posted this. How creepy and Tom like is Davis? Why not just say hell yeah we believe it or hell no we don't , instead of ranting about it being offensive. They did not think that one through #scientology
Scientologists go to such lengths to deny the Xenu/volcanoes story because Hubbard wrote that it can kill a person to hear the crazy concoction without proper introduction from the Church (aka thousands of dollars in their pocket, and sworn secrecy). Definitely batshit.
@snarkyzemma: L. Ron Hubbard was addicted to pills and booze during his entire adult life. No snark here, just the truth. Instead of managing his affliction, he spread it around. The whole Scientology cult is one bad delirium tremens nightmare, actualized. #scientology
@Moff: Exactly- since I am one of the greys, you probably missed my posting the video, which explains how we should all be expecting deadly pneumonia any moment now. [www.kesq.com]#scientology
Of course if you were asking a Jew to verify that they believed that being a matrilineal descendent of a mythical king named David gave made one favored in the eyes of the cosmic overlord named YHWH, and that ones actions were judged more favorably than identical actions performed against your tribe by outsiders... Perhaps he might be a bit reticent as well. "I'm sorry but I find the public use of my cosmic overlord's name offensive. " Or asking a fundamentalist Christian whether he felt that mormons or catholics were christian.
But sooner or later, they would answer honestly. Silly though these beliefs may be, they aren't secret. #scientology
