I think people on here are being pretty dramatic with their 'the kids are tarnishing Dr. King' talk. What he stands for his bigger than his own flaws and those of his children.
I was pretty upset when I found out just like a year or two ago that it was known he had affairs. I swear I had a few tears. I know he's just human and it doesn't change the fact that I think he's one of the best people to walk this earth. It sounds like his family feels maybe they weren't a priority. I think it's pretty telling that not one of those kids ever had kids of their own. The litigation and fighting is just a symptom of some people who seem pretty sad. But others get past things, I'm sorry they didn't seem to.
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
I don't recall the name of the program in particular (it may have been 60 Minutes) but a few years back there was a story about the licensing of King's image (by his kids, natch) to various commercial entities. And I believe that his 'image' was actually levered out to a major corporation no? I know I sound useless here, as I can't recall the details but there you have it. Nothing taints your legacy like having shitty kids.
@Worst Spelling Ever: You know what this is? Poetry, is what. For great poets can never be expected to be anchored to one simple denotation. Details are unimportant. Detonation.
Another outrage is the Memorial's being designed and I believe in China in a way that makes King look much more like a Chinese emperor than like himself. Dynastic fail.
I'll bet it costs a hell of a lot less than $120 Million though. Or maybe not -- they're kickback-crazy in Chinka.
So they're talking about $800k or so, and then we see $1 Million+ in fees on the tax return(?). $1.8 Million in skim and then whatever they've worked out with the construction people. Whoo-ee, they've sullied a memory.
The dream of something or other is being kept alive.
The family's behavior reminded me of how Elvis Presley manager Colonel Tom Parker responded shortly after Presley's death to a question on what would he do next, and he said something like "I'll keep managing him."
This doesn't get as much play in the national media, but I was born and raised in Atlanta and now live in Athens (which still falls under the umbrella of Atlanta media) and the utter terribleness of the King children is kind of common knowledge here. They're all pretty loathsome and detestable. I think the only one that had any redeeming qualities passed away in the last few years.
@pssshwhatever: It started with an embarrassing moment on one of the nightime talk shows, early on. Corretta Scott the K was sitting there, and she said, to Merv or Johnny or maybe even Dick: "I'm really a singer."
This was the first career move. Then came the rest of the clan. Probably the most revolting in a long line of avaricious angles was the play for Conspiracy. Dexter and the rest, they shook the hand of the goon that murdered the only worthwhile member of the family. I wondered about that. Either they are collectively as insipid as the Bush clan, or it was strictly a marketing move, for just look how the Kennedys have flourished behind all the nutcase theories.

A sickening sample of the ravages of nepotism.
