    The Buble Revolution is just an extension of the long tradition of Canada gifting the U.S. starting with Ann Murray to Gordon Lightfoot to Celine Dion. Ann Murray is the George Washington-like pioneer of this tradition.

    @Maura Johnston: (One could also hazard a guess that both the indie explosion of recent years and the "Twilight" phenomenon are seen in magic-mirror-inflated form thanks to this thing that you and I are typing on, here. "Twilight" is a much bigger phenom, to be sure, but one could say that's in large part to an inherent advantage that movies have over music. Let's do a little bit of theorizin'!

    IF the (white, young, well-educated) media types who source their stories from the Internet -- because who really has time for reporting these days, amirite?! -- tend to gravitate toward the sorts of communities where people would freak out about Twilight and indie rock (exhibit A: ONTD), and don't really have to stray too far from their comfort-zone bubble in order to feel like they've done "research"...

    THEN the (white, well-educated) media types who are charged with covering "culture" are much more likely to stay within their comfort zone while covering said culture, despite them feeling like they've done the shoe-leather research in order to "get the story" because they read a lot of message-board posts where people were OMG'in and !!!'in.

    And so you have Michael Buble "sneaking up" on these types in plain sight, even though the mere act of flipping on a TV would have made it obvious that he was going to hand Kiss and Ben Gibbard their collective behinds.

    BTW no one in music can be the "biggest star on earth." Unless they're from, say, Asia. And even then? Only maybe.)

    @Adah: There are different levels of uncool. Old people uncool is acceptable (but only for old people), while indie rock bands on major labels cool is not. It has something to do with the self-awareness of those purchasing the music, how it relates to their overall lifestyles (or doesn't), and how likely they are to think themselves cool because of their music choices and/or correlating appropriated image.

    Having said that, if Gawker is shaming you instead of the other way around, you're not exercising your commenter rights to their fullest extent. #michaelbuble

    @princesslala: Perhaps I should have phrased it differently. He sings...nice. And I have found most Canadians nice. Moreso in general than people where I'm from.
