Matt Weiner Is Using Mad Men to Enact His Devious Revenge |

Depopulating all the Ground,
And, with his whistling Sythe, does cut
Each stroke between the Earth and Root,
The edged Stele by careless chance
Did into his own Ankle glance;
And there among the Grass fell down,
By his own Sythe, the Mower mown."

Years later, I was auditioning for this new show, Mad Men. I walked into the casting office to audition and just as I was about to start, the director asked me my name. When I told him, he said, "Hey, man, it's me--Matt!" After I regained consciousness, I asked him what he was doing there, and as the words trickled from my lips, I did that existential algebra that said "bald, overweight-curmudgeon-in-training... has become Matt Weiner."
I didn't get the part. Worse yet, he still owes me $5 over that cheesy bet....

The Mad Men creator said Rosemarie DeWitt's character -- Don's beatnik lover, Midge -- balanced independence and kept-womanhood.
But I heard he didn't like DeWitt -- and wrote her out. On the other hand, maybe Weiner had played out the suit-beatnik tension and wanted to move on to a new love interest for Don.

If I were AMC, I'd not worry so much if the episodes were :55 or 1:07. You can edit for syndication later, "Sopranos" style. Plus I'd start looking for sponsors to "own" episodes. You've got a pretty specific audience there.

Perhaps bad blood still brews, though.
