January Jones played Betty really well, and the character was interesting for a while, but the character herself was tiresome. Her treating the kids as if they were trash, never reading a book, constantly at loggerheads with her brother. I just can't feel sympathy with those sorts of people. And I can't feel sympathy for Betty, no matter how much her character supposedly embodies the changing roles of women in the '60s.
We're talking about someone who doesn't try at all. She doesn't take pleasure in anything except her Victorian fainting couch. Maybe the fact that she can speak Italian is cool, but she ditzes out in every other aspect of her life. What's worse, her WASP-alabaster skin is thinner than tissue paper. She takes offense at everything. I'm looking forward to more of a certain hot-blooded schoolteacher of uncertain origins who's passionate about civil rights. That's a good story arc: she and Don stumbling through the burgeoning cultural upheavals of the '60s together with Don a member of a proto-hippie-collective ad-agency and she some radical teacher in the suburbs. Let Trudy Campbell take on Betty's culturo-critical function.
Is anyone with me here? Betty is the interjection "meh" in human form.
This is interesting, and means the story could go anywhere. Season 4 could begin on day 2 of Draper Cooper Sterling and Price, two months later, two years later. I for one would love to see how Don deals with teenage children, a new serious relationship (Bring back Rachel Menken!), and an estranged ex-wife undoubtedly married to a lunatic. #madmen
The Draper-household drama got tiresome to watch, so in one way I'm relieved that it's come to end. That said, Betty was a fascinating character--by sheer virtue of her fucked-up-ness--so I hope we get to see how things pan out for her in S4. #madmen
I will be so glad if they are done with the Betty Draper plot line. I love the rest of the show but I hate how crazy she is and can not stand the way she treats her kids. #madmen
@drunkexpatwriter: One of the things I love about Betty Draper is that she's not a stereotypical Perfect Wife/Mother that TV shows us all the time. She reacts like a real woman in difficult situations, and the fact that she's not perfect with her children and in her marriage makes her more relatable and more heart-breaking to me.
TVs full of wives/moms who aren't crazy and never take their frustrations out on their kids. You can go watch re-runs of The Donna Reed Show if you like, but give me Betty Draper any day of the week. #madmen
@magstheaxe: I like that they are trying to portray a different sort of mom, but it just feels poorly executed to me.
Her entire story arch seems to be doing what whichever father figure happens to be in front of her wants at any given time.
She does have that one great moment when she confronts Don about the Bluebeard Drawer. but other than that it seems like she does a lot of simply pouting.
And she's not leaving Don for independence, just for a new type of dependence.
The worst for me is that it's almost impossible to figure out what's going on inside her - though that could be January Jone's fault.
The show has a lot of interesting women with interesting internal lives. Think of Joan and Peggy.
Betty just doesn't seem to have that depth to me. #madmen
Interesting. Weiner seems less attached to his characters than we are. Maybe we have seen the last of Sal and the rest of the Sterling Cooper pack.
What woman will occupy Don's time? Whatever happened to his Greenwich Village artist hippy chick? Maybe we see her again. She would be an easy way to drag the 60's into his gray flannel life. I don't think we will see much of Missy Schoolteacher from now on.
Also, I am looking forward to bad things happening to Dr. Rapey, of course, but also Henry Francis. I think little big girl Sally may not enjoy his presence. And with Betty taking a minor role, we probably won't get to see Don kicking little bro's ass. #madmen
@son of spam: I really don't think he'd bring Sal back... I've heard people speculate re: Sal joining SCDP but I mean, the Lucky Strike conflict? #madmen
@son of spam: @tunamelt: What if the spoiled son at Lucky Strike were outed and kicked out of the company? That would open the door for Sal to come back and also drive home the profound homophobia of the era. It's not like that guy (nepotism-ish wanker) was subtle, by any measure. #madmen
@PaisleyPajamas: They didn't out people in the 60's. They just whispered about them. Sal's character already demonstrated the nature of homophobia at the time; why belabor the point? It isn't central to the show. #madmen
@son of spam: Well, not "out-out" him, but the board of directors of Lucky Strike knowing kind of "out." I see your point, though. It's out of the range of these characters and this era to really do or say anything meaningful on the subject of homophobia.
@roxymilo: It's a nice way for an actor to launch a career, though. #madmen
Eh, she's still the mother of those Draper tykes. Admittedly, Don won't see much of his old family if she marries closet-psycho Henry. But there are certainly reasons why Betty should at least be in a continuing B-plot. #madmen
Brian - it's PRYCE , damn it, once and for all. PRYCE. I love your style, but your columns seem to have more typos and spelling errors than most. Examples: "almost any any character" and "Between this an a well-regarded turn on Broadway". Gawker is better than this....
@ChasityNuggletron: If you had bothered to read the very first posts here, you would have known that we all knew it was Pryce and we did not give a fuck. Sorry. #madmen
I suspect Betty will be around for next season because Don still needs a bad girl in his life. It's the only way Don can take Bets seriously-as another woman.
Sal will be back eventually. How can he not? You know Don will find some client who will benefit from Sal's exclusive experience.
Peggy will stay around and develop foolish feelings for Don once she learns he's getting divorced.
Roger and Joan are so going to get it on!
Trudy will end up with Joan's doctor once she learns that Pete is non-stop drooling over a self-Betty-fied Peggy.
Gawker -- cute, fun article but your odds are backwards (duh?) and there are typos...do bloggers not have same editing/controls as more traditional journos? Who gave the okay to post?
@Trixie from Toronto: They're not backwards....if you look at the most likely scenarios, the odds are better than even, i.e. 1 to 500. For the less likely ones, they're below even, i.e. 500 to 1. #madmen
@justinis1badmofo: I am reading it this way: "Odds of Don returning are one in a million." Am I reading it wrong? I would get it if it said "Odds of Don NOT returning are one in a million." #madmen
@Trixie from Toronto: Try reading it as "one for, one million against." That's how we do it in Vegas. This means even money return on a bet if he returns, and a spectacular return if he does not.

The Daily Beast: The formation of the agency left a lot of characters in the wind. Have we seen the last of Ken, Paul, and Sal?
Weiner: I am going to say something that I don’t always say: I don’t know.
