    Does anyone remember when Burger King attempted to have table service? I'm sure it was test market thing, but it was completely ridiculous. They would give you these dinner baskets and everyone, from the employees to the customers, were completely confused as to what was going on.

    At the risk of being looked at as a fat, unclutured American (well, I'm not fat at least), I ate at a McDonalds in London years ago, but only because they had some sort of McCurry Burger and I HAD to try it to find out what it was like.

    @BitchyD: It wasn't bad, actually. Maybe I was influenced by the fact I was eating a McDonald's hamburger with curry on it while hanging out in Notting Hill, but I thought it was not too spicy; you definitely got a warm curry flavor but it was mostly from this sauce they put on it and not some flavoring in the meat. But not bad.

    I walked by this place and was slightly in awe at how civilized it looked until I realized no one was actually eating. They were only sitting around. The fancy part was only in the front of the restaurant, once you entered and passed a wall it was your typical sterile, hard plastic and grease stains Mickey D.

    This sounds like the McDonald's we visited in Paris because my son would eat nowhere else. The coffee was great and much cheaper than that in the cafes. I took a bite of his hamburger and that was significantly better than anything I had ever tasted a US Mickey D's.

    It's interesting that they can do a good job if their clientele demands it.

    @The Marble Faun: You force a fifteen year old boy to eat something he doesn't want to eat. I would like to watch. *heh* He did eat with us at other restaurants - it just didn't seem like it at times.

    There was also free wi-fi, another attraction. McDonald's is popular with French kids, they call it "McDough."

    And I did not eat there - I only had some coffee one morning.

    And after you've paid eight euros for a tiny cup of coffee, three euros for medium cup is mighty nice.

    @intime: I ate what my parents told me to eat at 15. We were on the poor side and ate what was given to us. No shade to you, honestly. I guess I'm just of the school that you do what your parents want (within good reason, of course.) That said, my nephew does the same to my brother. I get it. Kids are difficult.

    @The Marble Faun: I did the same. We actually did not have many fast food places in town anyway. It was not an issue back then. But, with him, I have found is that I need to choose my battles. He has some issues - that are more serious than what he wants to eat. And the battles around those issues are the ones I choose to fight. My parents were lucky, I was a "good" kid and they never once had to utter the words "Did you do your homework" to me. I made my own dinner when I found myself home alone at night. I got a part-time job, ironically at a fast-food joint and paid my own expenses and put myself through college. I was self-motivated and never whined.

    Gosh, I was PERFECT!

    Now that I think about they were REALLY lucky! *lol*

    Empirically, it would be very difficult to choose between eating gross food in Europe or an early-90s music video. Europe is great and all, but "The Freshman" was just so ground-breaking...

    It's a pretty brilliant business strategy when you think about it: in an attempt to be successful, McDonald's tries to not be so...McDonald's.

    Clearly they're catering to (read: targeting) the Starbucks crowd and have created a Zion for the laptop crowd effectively dismantling an empire.

    Next step, target people who would otherwise never set foot inside a McDonald's to begin with, but still pretend to have a ton of disposable cash. My suggestion: build a bookstore around the McDonald's so that when people walk in, they say to themselves, "This surely isn't a McDonald's I've walked in to. Look at all the shelves of books!"

    That's when your proselytism begins.

    I don't know if it's an urban legend or if it's true, but I grew up hearing ,and believing, that the orange/red color scheme and the uncomfortable hard, slippery seats were to make you stay exactly long enough to finish your meal, chewing quickly, and no longer.

    Just like the subway.

    All I ever ate there was the Filet O'Fish and sometimes fries.

    Maybe if they bring back the fried apple pie ...
