a post about how twitter was not as relevant in iran as was hyped by the US media was promising until out of nowhere you go into the guy with the dust mask you talked to which has little do do with the topic.
dude, you should have just tweeted that part. #iran

Though the charges have since been dropped, but if an American can be arrested for twittering a "revolution", then our government can't really condemn others for cracking down on those in the field.

@Pope John Peeps II: Agreed, but when I first heard of the Madison fellow's arrest, I immediately thought of the shot to our credibility, if we were to condemn other governments for making similar arrests.

It's sort of like when the Bush-era waterboarding story was confirmed. It wasn't even days until comparisons were made to WWII-era convictions for war crimes.

Sure, the charges against Mr. Madison have been dropped, but if we want to be able to encourage social networking as a means to organize, then we can't be arresting people for doing the same thing. #iran

Well, the editorial agenda here has been crystal clear from the get-go (i.e., "scapegoating").

I have no idea what's going on with this story because: (a) most news outlets have released information that has turned out to be utterly, painfully wrong, and (b) the rest (like Gawker) are pursuing a pro/anti-discrimination agenda.

By the time any truth is uncovered, you will all have lost interest...so as usual, the readers remain uninformed. #media

Very little -- almost none -- of this effort adds meaning to the world. Or even entertainment.

Local papers, and papers pretending to be national papers, please develop something of a local consciousness on your public instititions. This stuff can be handled by the tabs. #media

...a profession that not only did I personally love doing, but that I value for society...

I admire his stepping up to the podium and trying to turn a bad into a good, but this quote? He loved it so much he faked getting the job done and he valued it so much he plagiarized others' work. He needs to choose his words more carefully if he wants to be taken seriously as someone who has done some soul searching on the wrongs he committed. #journalismism

@PaisleyPajamas: Remember Stephen Glass, Blair's brother-in-disgrace, who fabricated a billion stories, got caught, and then went on to pursue a law degree (ha!) and publish a contrite-ish biographical novel? Your comment reminds me of the reaction of New Republic's literary editor, Leon Wieseltier--Glass' former boss:

"The creep is doing it again. Even when it comes to reckoning with his own sins, he is still incapable of nonfiction. The careerism of his repentance is repulsively consistent with the careerism of his crimes."

"Careerism of repentance".. Now this is a fine, useful phrase to keep in mind. #journalismism

@Bunsy: Sure, you can. But if the person being charged is me - who can take it, repurpose it in my own language, and make it more profitable (the cost of paying for the NYT vs. the cost of reporting the NYT) - the value of the information drops dramatically, as quickly as I can make it my own. And I just don't think you can't protect the value of something like a huge scoop to justify what it costs to get it anymore. You've got to offer something else.

@Bunsy: Because eventually the information makes its way into the public space. In other words, if information has any value at all, that value pretty much disappears the instant it hits the air. The pay wall only works if you can control, in a very narrow way, the limits of the medium (in this case the internet). #peterkaplan

I kind of love the quote about how it takes a single day to decipher whether a reporter is worth his or her weight. That really speaks to an intuitiveness amongst quality journalists, something that perhaps cannot be taught at school but merely refined (or alternately, stunted) by grooming.

And Tina Brown is a lot [many things-er] than all of us, but that does not make her in any way something we should continue thinking about. #peterkaplan
