@BettyCrocker: @BettyCrocker: Yeah, or someone murders someone and capital punishment works (well, works if you agree with it) like the law says it does. Not everything is about race, even in the south. Crazy, right! tl;dr - a nilla would have gotten the dealth penalty too. #murder

@Buttafooco, @Angriest Greek: I was ignorant of the law and statistics in this particular case, so I thank you, but I was just trying to give an interpretation of BettyCrocker's comment. But even so, from what knowledge I did have, it's been found that the death penalty is applied unevenly between blacks and whites (in general). #murder

@Lucky: Point well taken. I think one of the reasons for that may be because when it's applied to whites, we don't often hear about it in the media as much as when it applies to blacks, which is especially true if it's black on white crime. #murder

@Buttafooco: We heard about this not because he is a black man but because she was so loved by the community. The murder was gruesome and devastating to the area. I think the death penalty would be sought regardless of who did it because of the role of Anne Pressley.

@Buttafooco: Interesting chart. Did you look at the population numbers for the state by race? Because according to the U.S. Census bureau, the racial divide in Alabama is 71% white and 26% black, making a nearly equal division in executions by race disproportionately applied.

@Scooter34: I actually did not and I must confess I suck at statistics and maths. However, wouldn't you have to look the racial makeup of the prison population, rather than the general population? It may be a 71% white to 26% black in the general population but when you look at the prison population, the numbers are much different. However, there is no denying the fact that the media seems give more traction to crimes that involve black men against white women. #murder

You know, as much as I appreciated Newsweek's attempt to get out of the news-weekly format before it was beyond dead and buried (I mean, come on, other than Time's man of the year issue, who in the world has picked up a newsweekly since, um 1996?)

But their idea to make themselves more abbreviated economist was, well, really boring.

Anyway, sad for the 13 staffers. Though I'd hope anyone at a newsweekly would have their resumes very well polished and posted at the appropriate job sites. #newsweek

Did anyone watch the Michael Moore interview with Hannity? He pulled the same bullshit. They were talking about health care (even tho the topic was ostensibly his Capitalism movie) and how it was better, or more accessible in Cuba. Sean ran some footage of what looked like an abandoned building (ie: there were no patients/doctors walking around, just dirty empty rooms) and tried to pass it off as a hospital. Moore just started cracking up and calling him out. Hannity promptly changed the subject.

    here's some video

Are we still operating under the assumption that the Washington Post is the liberal opposition to the Times? The WaPo (or maybe just the editorial page) seems like it's positioning itself to fill the neo-con void and I'm more than prepared to completely ignore their bullshit as well. The Weekend is still pretty legit but otherwise, the cord is nearly cut. #washingtontimes

I was at an event at the Council on Foreign Relations ( John Kerry) and it was opened up to questions. Reporters were sitting in the back. Except one, Barbara Slavin from the Washington Times. She was sitting with that awful Congresswoman Harman. I noticed it because all the other questions came from the back. Even stranger was Congresswoman Harman asking Sen.Kerry a question as well as if she couldn't kick with him on the Hill. It was very odd because she asked her question (really 3) after it was announced that these would be the last questions taken. I put her in my Moonie category that day. #washingtontimes

@Go Like Hell Machine: Sorry, I will try to explain it without any shortcuts. I went to an event at the council on foreign relations in DC. John Kerry was speaking , he had just gotten back from Afghanistan. The reporters were all sitting in the back , they had to. It was marked media. The room was small. All the questions came from the back, except this one lady Barbara Slavin who got up to ask the question, but she wasn't in the media section . She was sitting next to Democrat Congresswoman Harman. The Washington Times has been quite supportive of Harman through her possibly criminal involvement with those Israeli spies. i know this is really confusing. My point was that no other media- there were some heavy hitters there- sat in anywhere near the front. The second weird thing was Harman asking Sen. Kerry a question , like a reporter would. The mediator said these will be the last 3 questions and Harman raised her hand. She then asked 3 questions in one, they were not friendly questions either. I thought it was odd since I am assuming as Democrats in foreign relations committees albeit in 2 different houses of congress, she could ask him whatever questions she wanted at some other time. I think those questions were for the benefit of the Washington Times. I hope this makes some sense #washingtontimes
