Huh?
What he meant to say was:
"with the SWORD OF Damocles now hanging over us"
It's the sword that is facing these softball-playing literates, not Damocles. Damocles was the king's sycophant.
Saying the "Damocles of layoffs" only sounds smart and bookish, but really the phrase "Damocles of layoffs" makes no sense. What could that possibly mean? The "court sycophant of layoffs"?
So stuff it, uppity Vanity Fair editorial assistant guy!
