Walked passed Mel Gibson getting his picture taken with a bunch of drunk obnoxious restaurant-goers last night (December 13th) around 6:15pm on the corner of Broadway and East 20th. Was wearing his black leather jacket and had a full head of grey hair. Pulled over to confirm the sighting with a nearby doorman, and we both rolled our eyes at it. For a fleeting moment, I have to say I kind of pitied him for having to deal with such a big group of Loud Stupid Drunks... but then realized that if it's possible to get away with being a vocal anti-semite and running away from your seven children... and still get that kind of love... than the world is fucked up in far more complicated ways than I could imagine. Taller than I thought he would be.
@BadUncle: I love the trumpet call from that movie. Here's the clip of 'The Viking Ladder' scene, with 'Eagle Eye' Kirk Douglas getting into the castle. It looks like someone has put the entire movie on YouTube, in eleven parts.
I can't find the trumpet blast without combing through a butt-load of 'purple pride' Minnesota Viking clips.
@BadUncle: ...ah, the search for the golden bell (The Mother of Voices)! I must have been 12-14 when I saw that movie, and I flipped out when they found the white plaster chapel on the hill, and rang that little bell...
Widmark and Poitier both looked good in the facial hair! It even has Amber Tamblyn's dad it it. After watching The Pathfinder last week (Don't bother- the concept is much better then the movie), I need to watch one of these two great Viking flicks.
@jorel845: He can look very attractive, but I think for some women it's about the acting. He wasn't exactly an Adonis for large parts of This Boy's Life or Gilbert Grape.
As an avid examiner of the ways in which Ho'wood tricks the movie-going public into seeing their current brand of tripe, the fact that Avatar has a 91% tomato meter reading at Rotten Tomatoes--pre-release--is certainly a stunner. This is the first time I've bothered to check over there before a film is released and am wondering how this will change after the film hits theaters.
DiCaprio playing a viking is a stretch, but nothing can top his atrocious attempt to convince movie-goers that he could play basketball, much less have the ability to dunk.
Are those the same blue people white folks always talk about when they're trying to prove they're not racist? "I don't care if you're black, white, green, or blue! I don't see color!"
The best Viking movie is unquestionably the hilarious "The Vikings" with Tony Curtis and Kirk Douglas as step brothers. The main highlight being Tony using his pet bird to attack Douglas and peck his eye out.
@south2nd: Oh it's a must see. I think it was one of those 50's films that didn't appear on DVD until just a few years ago. Janet Leigh is in it as well. And yeah, the brooklyn accents don't hurt.
Some people just do not look good in still photography. Or at least, they don't look as good as when they are in motion. I usually have a wet-on for Leo in almost all his films but when i see a picture of him, I just don't get how I'm attracted to such a soft-faced, flesh-bearded greasball.
@Airvault: Although recently their focus has been more on the future, as in 2012 mayan prophesy bullshit. I long for the days of 6 hour long hitler assassination plot documentaries.
that pic is hilarious. Could Reinhardt look any more into himself? Clearly Paris is completely incidental.
Also -- on the Nick Cage thing: from what I've observed knowing Francis tangentially, the Coppola's are conscientious, tight and put family first. #parishilton
@themediatrix: Cage's Pop was a great guy--he put the "cur" in curmudgeon in the best way possible. He liked his wine, his red meat, and as I recall, he smoked like a burning tire factory. Extremely ascerbic, insightful, unsentimental, yet caring. My condolences to his family for their considerable loss.
