@Mediahohoho: Why would JAMA ever give him the cover when the professional body it represents stands to make less insane salaries if reform passes? They don't want reform, even if it's better for their patients, because at the end of the day, they're just a bunch of self-interested assholes, like the rest of the business world.
@skt.smth: To be fair, I can't think of a single doctor I know who doesn't support some form of single-payer, government-run health insurance. But then, I don't know any cosmetic surgeons, either.
@ShanghaiLil: So true! I've never once met an individual doctor who was against a broader, more inclusive health insurance scheme as well. But the professional association they're a part of is like a big fat unofficial union that constantly comes out against anything and everything that will reduce, by any amount, the crazy salaries of medical professionals, let the overall health of patients be damned.
It's just like how, when you talk to public school teachers individually, they pretty much all agree that we need some major education reform, even if it means they lose some of their current perks (tenure, for example). But the teachers' union comes out against virtually any reform that lays a finger on benefits teachers currently enjoy, even if it means that they're also coming out against shit that would really help school children.
At some point you have to wonder, if these professionals diverge so clearly from the recommendations and values of their professional organizations, why the hell don't they oust the idiots in charge and install more like-minded people? It's no longer enough for them to be like "Personally, I empathize with your argument, but..." That's not enough. Get your organizations on board, or those organizations' opinions aren't worth shit.
What's sad, really, is that he looks so... old. What will become of this man, who writes about abs, when he starts looking even older? It's a bit tragic.
Between the twin Giant Davids of HBO, Chase and Simon, I'll only buy Simon a beer. And yeah, he might angrily decline and lash out at me. But if any man earned the right to be a grumpy asshole and churlishly refuse free beer, it's David Simon.
Come on people, get your facts straight. Men's Vogue did not fold. It's still being published, albeit only twice a year. Folding means no more issues ever.
