I interviewed Joe Scarborough yesterday about his book. All my questons were about subject material in his book, except for my last one, which was about George Tiller. He answered it (he talked about how he defended Griffin was doing it as a favor to a friend)
A little less than two minutes later, I got a call from his personal assistant who reprimanded me for askign about Tiller when I said the interview was going to be about the book. He wanted to make sure that wasn't going to be the lead of the story, which it wasn't.
I'll throw at these insane pricks the same argument they throw at the Muslim world ll the time. Where's the pro-life movement's collective outrage over this murder? They should be marching in the streets condemning this act of terrorism lest their silence be deemed a form of collusion or support.
It's a misnomer that those who are "against" another individual's health choices are "pro-life". A better term would be pro-fetus. Or semen supremacist. Or maybe even nosy parker.
@shutupitsmine: Assholes who kill people who disagree with them, such as this yahoo, do suck and I would agree with you -- they aren't pro-life. But to loop all pro-life people as anti-choice is inflammatory and just plain wrong.
@momof3wildkids: You're using the term "pro-life" in a very different way than the people who originated it. If you want to change the meaning of the word, you're going to have to claim it back from anti-choice groups like Operation Rescue (who want to make all abortions illegal, aka taking choice away from all women) and the National Right To Life Association (who also want to ban all abortions). These groups originated the term "pro-life" and they march under the "pro-life" banner to this day. Just because you give the term your own warm-and-fuzzy retrofitting doesn't make the meaning change.
If you aren't anti-choice, you aren't pro-life.
Here's the definition:
The adjective has one meaning:
Meaning #1: advocating full legal protection of embryos and fetuses (especially opposing the legalization of induced abortions)
If you don't advocate banning all abortions YOU AREN'T PRO-LIFE.
When Steve Albini produced Fred Schneider's solo album, did that mean Albini liked it? Lawyers are the same way. They work with the law like Albini works with the knobs. It's not necessarily about agreeing with the cause.
@jimstoic: Yes not every lawyer agrees with the views of their clients. And every accused person deserves a lawyer no matter how despicable their views or acts. But for your analogy to hold, Albini would have to a) have never worked with any shitty musicians prior to Schneider, just as Scarborough was a civil attorney who didn't normally take criminal cases, but went out of his way to help Griffin; b) have a professed and outspoken love for shitty music, just as Scarborough was outspokenly anti-choice; c) have been financially supported by shitty music organizations, just as Scarborough's political campaign was underwritten by anti-abortion groups; and d) have claimed to have just been doing Schneider a favor because he was a family friend, and that he wasn't really a producer, only to later be flatly contradicted by Schneider, who would have to have said that Albini actually tried to stay on as engineer for his shitty record, but was barred from doing so by the record label. Also, Kate Pierson would have to have murdered someone with her shitty music and then Albini would have to be curiously silent about said murder on his national television show. Other than that, point taken.
What if he was "motivated by ideological kinship?" Believing that abortion should be illegal is not the same as shooting physicians who work at women's clinics, nor is it a mark of intellectual midgetry or a moral failing. He has as much of a right to be pro-life as you have to be pro-choice, and frankly, the death penalty is barbaric.
