Sigh. These are the same people who fantasize in New Yorker articles about Bloomberg that Mark Green will be mayor someday. How did I come to align myself with people so stupid?

As a once and future resident of that great Commonwealth, can I nominate Deval Patrick?

Michael Dukakis may be "Born to be Mild," but he is hugely qualified and has already won statewide office and, after all, is only a placeholder for 5 months. Any opponent of this would really have to be a wingnut, considering that this is Teddy's last wishes (although not the letter of the law) as to who fills out 5 months of a term he already won. Maybe even a placeholder for Vicky Kennedy.

He could probably even win the seat in an actual election; it's only outside of MA that he's chiefly known for the crap slung around in '88. But he likely only wants to be a good team player and placeholder for a few months.
And if this gets the Demon Socialist Nazi Healthcare Bill passed, screw it, let the Dems be as partisan and quasi-ethical as the GOP has been for, oh, as long as I have been alive and noticing these things.

@City_Dater: He'd even be an asset if the Dems want to get a health care bill through before year's end. Dukakis is a legendary policy wonk.

I'm a Democrat, and I really want to see the Senate retain the Dem super majority as we approach the healthcare debate, but . . . I just dislike the hypocrisy of reverting back to the appointee system, when Kennedy himself led the fight to get rid of it during the Romney years. I know the Republicans would do it in a heartbeat, too -- but it still stinks.

BTW: I like Dukakis, and voted for him in the presidential election. I think he'd do a fine job.

@The_Lovely_Miss_Bronx: If hypocrisy is needed to make America a better country, then bring it on. Yay hypocrisy!
