for the au courant impaired, like myself, is this a reference to twittering about mj's funeral plans? or is ashton kutcher somehow involved in this mess without me noticing it?
This is actually quite hilarious. Matt is walking around an empty house, going from room to room and describing it as, "This room used to have chairs and sofas and rugs." Then he opens the door to an empty closet and says, completely straight-faced, "This used to have clothes in it."
The Jacksons are officially the creepiest family ever. What type of respect is it to have an open casket for the public when the guy spent most of his life with his face covered in masks?
@Queen of the Passive Aggressives: Honestly I was kind of hoping they would go the Lenin's Tomb route and take him on tour. Doesn't he already own a sleep chamber that could preserve him?
Also, I'm assuming that TMZ pays its sources off, since it's not confined by normal journalistic standards. That would definitely give them an edge. A slimy, slimy edge.
The reality is that no one would care if TMZ was wrong. Every source I found was saying "TMZ is reporting Jackson is dead," which was obviously a big fat disclaimer for anyone who knows who TMZ is.
@rhys1882: That's what I heard, too. And the second place I saw "He's dead" with no hedging was at the local TV website KTLA. CNN waited for the L.A. Times for no reason I can fathom.
The TMZ time stamp is 5:20. MJ was pronounced dead at 2:26 (5:26 ET). So he was reported dead before he was pronounced dead, although he probably was dead and TMZ guessed or got it from a source before the official report. Pretty morbid anyway.
@ethylic: The EMT's have been quoted saying that he was cold to the touch when they got there - and they wanted to pronounce him dead then (this would have been 2:30pm EST), and Murray made them continue CPR and take him to the hospital. So my thinking is the EMT's spilled - he was dead at the scene, and whenever it was "called" at the hospital is kinda not the story.
this may be a little old fogieish, but might this be the story that actually creates separation between the "old" and "new" media sets?
tmz has a distinguished resume, of course (they're even on the tv box!), but for the world at-large that finds out about twitter via Time magazine cover stories, doesn't the subject and international resonance of the story, plus their being so clearly and definitively out in front of the pack, get anyone on the fence off and into the backyard of tmz (or the new media site of their choosing)?
or maybe if you're still on the fence it wouldn't matter if they scooped the apocalypse, you're gonna shake god's hands with ink on your hands, dammit!
@T.A.N.: yes, how old fogie indeed. as i now see after following the "link" that's exactly what's being discussed by the "commenters" on that "website".
Tabloidbaby made a good point - TMZ may have just made a well-educated guess and rolled with it. Not, (says a blogger who has made a career out of such things), that there is anything wrong with that.
@RandomLunatic: I've thought the same thing. But Levin is reportedly very well-sourced in the LA area hospitals. He's got people on lockdown, so I wouldn't doubt if he heard it from someone on the inside.
@MadamButterfloozy: Gawker used to be a Manhattan media blog back when it had actual standards for commenters, so I'd guess that a lot of us here care. I do, for one.

I understand there are plans to put him in a glass coffin. When are they casting for the seven dwarfs?

If Papa Joe gets his way, I have no doubt that corpse will see more traveling than Eva Peron's.
