This crap about how he disagreed with Rumsfield is a canard too far. The article also detailed how he backtracked on that criticism when his special access to the Pentagon was cut off, and in any case, his criticism was that Rumsfeld didn't use enough manpower (and tanks and planes etc.) in the attack, which is entirely consistent with a war-profiteer on the make.

@it takes a lot to laugh: Exactly. And you can't forget that this was actually the real Pentagon line. If you were a high-level military functionary, would you want your command to be superseded by someone who wants to downsize the Pentagon, that is, Rumsfeld? No, you would want the public to believe that it would endanger troops in to go into Iraq with too small of a force.

First of all... tenet.

Second of all... do they really believe Barry Fucking McCaffrey ever gave two shits about journalism? The guy was the worst sort of head-in-the-sand drug war hack. Now he's a Pentagon/defense contractor propagandist.

You can slam CNN all day for general shittiness, but at least they hired the genuinely uncompromised Michael Ware and gave him free reign to cover military operations/foreign policy.

Glenn Greenwald's been really superb about this. The way he's going after Brian Williams, why the sexual tension is palpable. But he's right on, this has been going on for a long time, and cites an article from The Nation five frickin' years ago:

" In McCaffrey's recent MSNBC commentary, he exclaimed enthusiastically, "Thank God for the Abrams tank and . . . the Bradley fighting vehicle," and added for good measure that the "war isn't over until we've got a tank sitting on top of Saddam's bunker." In March alone, IDT [on whose Board of Directors McCaffrey sat] received more than $14 million worth of contracts relating to Abrams and Bradley machinery parts and support hardware."

Some killer product placement, there.
