    My birthday is near Mother's Day and that didn't seem to help. In fact, this year both events were cancelled due to lack of interest.

    Not to get all squishy, but isn't it important that you got to see your Mom?


    I know people who don't get to for geographical reasons, or worse, can't because their mothers have passed.


    People have their priorities glaringly out of order sometimes.

    Thse days, the main criteria for a place to take my Mum is the acoustics. Carpeted is good for the hard of hearing. Metal chairs screeching on floorboards is no good. I've never been to the Olive Garden but if it has carpeting it would definitely make the consideration list.

    My brother and his family are treating my mom to a bucket of KFC for dinner tonight. That officially makes me white trash, doesn't it?


    She seems sort of excited about it, though, so who am I to judge? I live in a different city, so I can't take her to dinner.

    Another lesson: Not every town in America has a Little Italy, Chinatown, Atlantic Avenue, etc. If people visit NYC and eat at Olive Garden they are deserving of scorn, but you can't judge someone in a "city" of 50,000 for considering it a nice restaurant for mom when the other options are Wendy's and McDonald's.

    @SaraRueful: The only restaurants in my town are a sketchy chinese place, a pizza joint, a trucker restaurant, and a few fast food places - Subway, KFC, DQ and A&W to be exact. Now seeing as none of those options are appealing for a nice occasion, driving the extra half a hour to go into the city to Olive Garden doesn't seem to bad.
