This could just be a generalization...but would it be thinkable to assess that MSNBC viewers are still mostly skeptics, cynics, and begrudging idealists, BUT Fox News viewers mostly buy their whole spiel hook, line, and "death panel?" So telling an MSNBC viewer to call their congressman would get just as many snorts of derision, as it would get people to pick up the phone, but the expectation is that if the same sentiment is coming from FoxNews it's like some Mission Control directive?
Funnily I think what's really being said here is less about the statement itself, but the attitude of the recipient. #rachelmaddow
@Swifter: It's quite unfortunate that some talking-head has that much power. If only I could use one of these guys to mention that I have a four-year-old portable washer for sale. Would save me the time writing an ad for Craigslist, you know, where all the murderers with dirty laundry hang out looking for call girls and energy saving appliances. #rachelmaddow
Though to be fair, I believe Rachel has said in a couple of interviews that she doesn't own a television, so she might not know what's on MSNBC before she gets into the building.
And I sometimes think of an old teevee gag no one else remembers, back in the time when drunks were funny, and to sober this one up, they somehow nailed all his furniture to the wall, so that he woke up with a hangover like always but had to negotiate breakfast on the wall with his robe somehow falling behind him followed soon by his orange juice.
And so the allegory has come true, and we are invited to an equivalency set whereby screaming off-the-wall teabag twits equate sharing health care and the Holocaust with the request by anyone on MSNBC to "write your congressperson."
Idiocy, plain and, as the teabaggers themselves, simple. #rachelmaddow
Dylan who?
I saw the thrust of the story as being how MSNBC's progressive headliner-ideologues are not all rah-rah Obama on their "nightly news-and-views-casts" but are trying to hold him accountable to their agendas. The distinctions with Fox that Maddow was making seem true for the evening and prime time shows. But yeah, Ratigan (I've never seen his show) shares their network so the story should have taken him into account.
Dylan Ratigan's bullhorn is sometimes turned up a few clicks too loud, but he makes some valid points on many issues. And what's wrong with ringing up your local representative to voice your thoughts/opinions on issues that affect your community? #rachelmaddow
@Swifter: I don't think you can fairly equate MSNBC with Fox. I mean, MSNBC has it's share of screamers, but I don't see them actively encouraging armed revolution amongst the flock.
Also, you do come across the pundits on MSNBC (Maddow is one who comes to mind) who, regardless of your politics, seems to genuinely encourage and debate opposing points of view. Name a single Fox talking head who does that. #rachelmaddow
@Go Like Hell Machine: Chris Wallace seems pretty fair to me and regularly calls out Fox right wing ideologues on their more lunatic diatribes. #rachelmaddow
@Go Like Hell Machine: Pox Noise is in the business of faking clips and producing lies to make false points for the RNC, and MSNBC simply calls them out on it. If anyone sees an "equivalency" (one unadmitted benefit of total "skepticism" is you don't have to think) there, it's them that's skewed. And so a proper debate on the subject would be to link to an MSNBC newsclip in which the very trees changed from spring to winter so that the crowd of their cretin cabal might look larger. #rachelmaddow
@Swifter: isn't that the one the lunatic fringe say doesn't belong there and should be fired? I never watch Pox Noise, of course, just like I don't venture down into our septic tank, but depend on those worthies who are willing for that service. #rachelmaddow
@Swifter: I haven't seen MSNBC providing intentionally false and misleading information like FOX does all the time, and FOX clearly does it for the purpose of promoting the republican party. #rachelmaddow
They NEED each other in order to have a villain, grow a following, build their ratings, and command high salaries. Don't believe the hype. #keitholbermann
@Gawkerati: CNN tilts to the left? You're kidding. What anywhere else in the world would be considered center-right at most gets considered "left" here. Meanwhile, yes, MSNBC skews mildly left in terms of its overall editorial viewpoint. But neither even approaches the level of totally ideologically-driven propaganda at which Fox News consistently operates.
However, even that is beside the point, really. Because my problem with Fox isn't that it's conservative. They have every right to be as conservative as they like, if they'd only be honest about it. What they don't have a right to do is to consistently misrepresent opinion as fact, misreport events, and create news, while pretending to be a "fair and balanced" source of information. #keitholbermann
@MissNormaDesmond: I'll agree with everything you said, but lately MSNBC has been more than listing to the left, especially in primetime and though CNN has lost some of their lustre due to budget cuts , I'd still put them closer to the middle of the road. #keitholbermann
@MissNormaDesmond: Totally agree. And keep in mind that both Shuster and Matthews routinely interview the most insane far right assholes as people having legitimate political opinions. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you former Bush/Cheney bag man and total nutcase Frank Gaffney, who famously said this year that Saddam Hussein was behind the Oklahoma City bombing. There is no corollary to that on the left, none. That's just insane.
@Mediahohoho: I've never seen Olbermann cry when discussing republicans, the way I see Beck cry when discussing Obama. I feel like crying every time that "person of color" John Boehner opens his mouth.
People can call MSNBC "left leaning" but they regularly give Pat Buchanan airtime for his crazy old time republican nonsense, and Joe Scarborough (un)Fair his own show. The best that Fox could do was let Alan Colmes meekly defend the left from time to time. #keitholbermann
@MissNormaDesmond: You are either blind, deaf and dumb...or I don't know what. MSNBC is 'mildly skewed' to the left? Have you ever watched the tv channel before? Olbermann is going to be getting the Nobel Prize in 2010 for "Righteous Liberal Indignation". Closely edging out Maddow. But not to worry, Ed Schultz, David Schuster and Chris Matthews are total right wingers. #keitholbermann
@Lance Uppercut: No, you're just someone who's bought into the insanity that is American politics, where right is now center and full-on reactionary wingnuttery is treated as valid commentary. What I said was that this is how these people would be perceived anywhere else in the world, and I stand by that. #keitholbermann
It's called Invidiocy, and it works. Sometimes. However, when Henry Kissinger had his 700-page alibi coming out at the same time as Eddie Fisher's autobiog, he sought to dismiss as a lightweight the former husband of Liz Taylor, and it didn't catch. Nobody read Henry's masterwork. Boo-hoo. #keitholbermann
Here's what I got from this clip-instead of being stupid and lying about big things, like death panels and fascism, be smart and lie about little things, like that Republicans are really concerned about Medicare or that taxes are going up.
@Unsolicited Advice: I am pretty sure I fall into the "ordinary American" category in the link below.
If it's all a gigantic lie, like his secret birth certificate, or his secret love of -isms, like communism/fascism/socialism, then I will retract when it all comes down. Or up, as the case may be.
Well, it's just that historically tax increases track increases in sovereign debt. While possible that the so-called "ordinary American" won't be taxed, I'm a skeptic in that area. Not trying to be all "SECRET NAZI TRICKS!" about it, but my thought was that we collectively understood that health care and the like were going to result in tax increases.
I used to bitch about "dishonesty" from the Obama administration about who would pay for the public option, for example, but I eventually agreed with supporters that most people had an understanding that there would be cost-to-you implications. It's a transaction, not a gift. If you're expecting a gift I'd recalibrate those expectations. #joescarborough
@Unsolicited Advice: I imagine that the 5% that owns all the wealth in the country, the ones that are not in the "ordinary American tax break" category have a lot to do with all this. There is no secret that that category will be taxed.
Which is the very reason why Republicans are frantically using so many of those big stupid lies AND little smart lies. #joescarborough
@Kobayashi Maru: There are always going to be people on the other side of the aisle with whom we disagree. At least Scarborough is a rationale human being and not one of the tea-party nut jobs that is rapidly taking over the Republican party. #joescarborough
@Fuzzy Dunlop: He's still flat out lying, is my point.
Like Medicare? Unless it helps them scare the shit out of the olds, Republicans don't give a rat's ass about Medicare, and haven't since it started. #joescarborough
This is sort of like when a girl who desperately wants to impress a group of guys goes off on a tirade about how she just hates women OMG they're sooooo annoying! (be my boyfriend!) #joescarborough
@morninggloria: "I just like, don't relate to girls at all. I only want to hang around with dudes, because girls are such shallow bitches. Not like me. I am deep. Also, I like sports. And belching." #joescarborough
@Notes from the underwhelmed: "And sex. Like, most chicks don't even watch porn, but I love porn, and sex. Like a guy. Except I want to have sex with guys. Unless making out with chicks turns you on.
@Notes from the underwhelmed: "And I hate drama. I can't stand all that girl-drama. Girls can be so dramatic."
This is what kills me (even as a woman, myself) because they're the ones who usually turn out to be the nuclear winters of drama. Always tell your guy friends to stay away from the girl who makes it a point to point out that she hates all the dramz. #joescarborough
And? You say that as if Fox News doesn't have a history of being openly (and cheerfully!) racist, such that it would be understandable to suspect the slip of being part of a pattern, rather than an isolated incident. #msnbc
@Benny: your point! miss Norma Desmond was just "sayin." How come everytime some one points out racism someone has to come a long with a "chill out." I really don't like the context of this post, "They All Look A Like." I understand you're (john@gawker.com) being fiticious and everything, but I hear hidden racist undertones in your text. "If Fox News did this, there would be sit in's," I feel that quote trivializes the civil rights movement, during which many great indiviuals lost their lives in the fight for equality and social justice. Is it now standard pratice to cheapen the lives of black people, to forsake their struggles for lame attempts at topical humor. So I will "chill" the moment this shit is deemed once and for all intolerable! #msnbc
Not sure why he didn't just respond in kind, and thank Campbell Brown for the intro... adding that it was very white of her to be so kind as to give him this opportunity to comment. #msnbc
@CODiva: This actually happened. Write this down. When Bobby Darrin first met Sandra Dee, he opened with "I've seen all your movies, Ms Weld." and she replied, "And I buy all your records, Fabian!"
And I'll bet nobody knows who any of these people were. #msnbc
