@somedayarealrainwillcome: Yes, I don't get the hate in this thread either. I don't know anything about Murray Hill, but this satire seems too pitch-perfect not to hit its target dead-on.
WHILE his classmates at Roslyn High School were being groomed for career paths leading to Goldman Sachs, D.J. Lubel was dreaming about making movies.
Last month, Mr. Lubel, 22, won first prize for best comedy at the Ivy Film Festival at Brown University. He wrote, produced and directed a 28-minute film he called ''Untitled in Long Island.''
The film, Mr. Lubel said, is the story of two suburban misfits trying to write a movie.
...''My friends all had it drilled into their minds that they should become either lawyers, doctors or investment bankers, and I couldn't imagine myself working 90 hours a week at an investment firm,'' he said. ''I'd rather shoot myself in the foot.''
Barbara Lubel, his mother, agreed. ''We knew he'd never make it as an investment banker,'' she said. ''D.J. has a gentle way of laughing at life's absurdities, and we have always encouraged him to embrace his quirkiness -- and his passion.''
Mr. Lubel knew he had the option of joining the family business, a chain of 40 Epic and Law stores, which sell hip-hop clothing on Long Island and in New Jersey. His older brother, Jared, also a Penn graduate, works there, and his sister, Jenna, a sophomore at Indiana University, plans to follow in Jared's footsteps.
Mr. Lubel is the only family holdout. ''Every time I walk into one of the stores, I become overwhelmed with anxiety,'' he said.
....Most of his friends are graduating from the Wharton School at Penn and will soon start high-paying jobs, but Mr. Lubel is less certain of his future. For now, he hopes to find a job as a production assistant in the movie business in Los Angeles or New York.
''Not everyone gets my sense of humor, but this award legitimized it,'' he said.
I know! I know! I've got a great idea! What if--now just bear with me here--what if actual adults just laid off tryna be all "cute" and "fey" once they reach actual adulthood! I know, totally crazy insane, right? But maybe maybe maybe people should try it.
Aside: I went on a Musiker tour. BUH. So not proud for so many reasons.
In what way is he a DJ exactly? And can one of you actual New Yorkers (I'm just a pathetic wannabe) explain what Billy Joel's floating head is doing at 2:50? Some sort of Long Island joke?
I must admit, though, may favourite lyric is "Get your head back in the car..."
@Not The Red Baron: Billy Joel is a famous Long Islander. He grew up there and lives there still. And is, for some reason, very proud to be from Long Island.
