Cajun Boy, I can only assume that you have never worked in the New York art gallery world. I see your self important a-holes and raise you 6,000 anorexic, alcoholic, black-clad medusas (medusi?) of both sexes, give or take a thousand once Larry Gagosian gets done killing and eating what remains of his staff.
I was always wondering: why US-ians are so obsessed about one-dimensional linear numerical orderings? No other culture that I'm aware of spends so much time compiling and discussing linearly ordered rankings.
Bill O'Reilly is ranked higher on the "Power Grid" than Ann Curry. An unabashed racist and intolerant ratings-grabber with an incredibly dangerous view of the world around him, ranked higher than Ann Curry.
@croush1211: This is the sort of thing that pisses me off about the media in general and web 2.0 specifically: the conflation of the popular with the good. Just because a lot of people are watching Bill O'Reilly, it doesn't make him worth listening to. Why can't mediaite supply the context in which these ratings occur? Oh, because that would take effort, and passion, and would likely render all of the rankings as ridiculous as the ones you pointed out.
"Buzz" is just the sound of the flies circling the cooling corpse of traditional media.
As usual, people read way too much into the "secret meaning" of trends like Twitter. I use Twitter just because it's fun, and I was a teenager a long time ago. I don't force them on anyone who doesn't want to read them, when they're automatically posted each day to my journal they're under a cut so no one has to read them if they don't want to. But some people do, so apparently I'm somewhat entertaining. I don't understand the unreasonable dislike towards it. Don't want to use Twitter? Don't use it.
And why is Twitter fun? Heck I've been working online for years and people automatically think I "love" doing things like "Tweeting" or even blogging... I don't...
I think there are some folks online who have huge identity/ego issues.
@Jack S: I just enjoy making little notes about things that I see or do in everyday life, and I like reading about the minutiae of other people's lives. Then again, I also like looking at people's vacations photos, so maybe I'm a bit of a masochist in that regard. I don't do it out of ego, or under the belief that people have to know what I'm doing at all times, it's just...I don't know. It's hard to explain to someone who isn't into it at all, but at the same time it's not exactly fair to paint all Twitter users with the same "egotistic attention whore" brush.
There's what one does consciously and what one does subconsciously. And I honestly think people who Twitter and blog every detail of their lives have real issues.
I picture you shaking a withered old fist@Jack S: Funny, that's what I think about people who get all worked up about what other people Twitter and blog all day.
When we look at ourselves in the mirror we seek to confirm with our eyes what we believe ourselves to be. When we Twitter, we seek to boost our ego by creating a fantasy image of how we would like to be perceived by others.
Why you gotta harsh on Twitter? It's not always used for letting others know what you're doing, it's also used to share ideas, articles, and brainstorming. If you're not Twittering, then you just don't get it.
@BowlingForDollars: If you're not Twittering, then you are probably leading a productive and meaningful life that doesn't require validation from a bunch of online acquaintances.
You sound like the crazies from Second Life that vehemently defend their pretend universe.
Twitter is interesting entertainment technology, but really, does anyone need Twitter in their life?

No it's funny you say that; I had a longer response written, but somehow in the midst of typing I closed the comment window. Heh.
