@The Cajun Boy: That man reached heights the few knuckle dragging trailer dwellers could dream of. That is except for those whose last names are Palin.
@mr_dude: I wish it was just indicative of Post Katrina N.O. Sadly, I think it is more indicative of the fact that a nice chunk of our government is corrupt.
I could give countless examples on both sides of the aisle. The sad fact is this: Grouped together, the corrupt politicians make Bernie Madoff seem like an amateur (assuming that tool acted alone, which is doubtful).
@momof3wildkids: But I guarantee you, that's not all he took. He took many more bribes. That's just the amounnt they found in the freezer after watching him pick up a briefcase filled with 100k in a parking lot in Virginia a few days prior.
@gawkimo: This has nothing to do with the private sector, which I agree isn't a paragon of virtue.
My tax dollars go to support a fair number of politicians who are corrupt who are supposed to be looking out for me and other Americans. That's what is the pisser here. I don't expect CEOs to be looking out for anyone but themselves, their shareholders and employees.
@kneetoe I am from Chicago and my family is big in politics in the state. I've see a fair bit of low level political corruption that has never been caught. Everything from casinos to real estate tax deals that always seem to work in the politicians favor. I'm not saying the majority of politicians are corrupt, but a larger share than you would think are.
@The Cajun Boy: Of course he took more. N.O. is much like my hometown of Chicago when it comes to corruption.
I still hold to my statement that he wasn't getting paid minimum wage for his corruption....
@momof3wildkids: Sorry, mom. I'm a little sensitive to the anti-government tirades going on these days. There is of course corruption in government, but there is also a good deal of accountability. Jefferson was found guilty in federal district court, which is as much a part of our government as the corrupt bits. My point is that the alternative is worse -- the private sector, as you pointed out, is about self-interest, and, I might add that it is far less accountable. This is why we privatize military actions -- because then companies like DynCorp and Blackwater (nee Xe) are not beholden to sunshine laws like the regular military is.
I had to travel to Korea on business a few weeks ago, right at the height of the whole Swine Flu lunacy, and we had a stopover in Japan.
Before we exited the plane, like four guys in full environmental suits came onboard and examined every passenger with heat guns to take their temperature, then used an ear thermometer if anyone gave an odd reading. Luckily nobody was running a temperature that day, because I was talking to one of the flight attendants who said that they'd quarantine everyone if someone came back with a fever.
When I got to Seoul, they did pretty much the same thing.
@Mean_Ol_Liberal: because he won re-election in 2006 for a myriad of reasons, most of them involving strange fear tactics and bait-and-swith double talk. the next mayoral election is coming up in february, and he is not going to run. hell, he's not even fucking taking CALLS at this point, no exaggeration.
