some of us read the chicago version and survive. my friend is a suntimes sports reporter and I have tried to discuss modern alternatives to his career. Why does everyone in journalism refuse to accept that all business models are changing and people need to adapt?

Because people -- almost all of them outside the business -- have been saying basically that about journalism ("Business models are changing! The marketplace is being reborn! The very bonds between particles are undergoing a quantum shift! Synergy!") ever since non-repro blue pencils were invented.

Admittedly, the paradigm-shift stuff is true once in a great while, but the hit rate is generally low. So while I agree that it probably is true this time, I nevertheless cut journalists a lot of slack for their natural skepticism, which has probably served them well many times in the past.

The only reason to go to artskool or to J school is to have fun, get drunk, make friends, and stay out of the street for a couple years. Expectations are futile, it's sorta like marrying a 99 year old billionaire in hopes he'll leave all his gold to you instead of his six children and four ex wives. Kind of a longshot bet.

yeah, so she can do what I did - get your MFA, show all over the world, get your crap in a dozen museums and then stupidly decide "damnit, I don't want to get stuck in some hole in the midwest chasing tenure", go for a med tech associates and make more $$$ than your tenured pals doing something mindless. it ain't fun but hell, it's a paycheck, and it beats the fuck outta trying to reinvent yourself every damn day.

yup, still working it out after all these years.

Does anyone remember late-night ads where a creepily tranquilized silver-haired man would say "Do you like art? You may have what it takes to become a serious art student. Don't wait! Call nooow." This against a montage of sad clowns and sub-LeRoy Neiman visuals.

It haunted me because instead of blowing $100k at Parsons I could have just taken a correspondence course and the results wouldn't have been too different, really.

A secretary at a place I used to work did this! She became very good at painting terrible pictures and now she spends every other weekend in a park trying to sell her paintings to passersby. She has incredible stamina!
