Of course, this is politics and things could change at any moment, especially if Giuliani asks current NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg to be his running mate, as many believe he will.

And Bloomberg would give him a hearty Hells Naws if Rudy even tries.

Bloomberg > Giuliani in smarts, policy, strategy and balls... yes, take that both ways.

Not arguing or anything but this article poses a question:

If the Clinton Machine is so powerful, then how come it didn't work against a virtual unknown in the Democratic Primaries?

I bring this up because I have a feeling that, as ridiculous as she is, Palin could potentially be a formidable foe if you partner her "charm" and "appeal" with actual policy and brains. As we all know, Rudy has absolutely no charm or appeal unless he's in drag. Sarah is no mental heavyweight but when Rudy gets right down to it, he can be. He was one of our most ruthless and brilliant Attorney Generals and although a terrible human being, he was a good mayor for the city in a way.

So I'm wondering if the Clinton Machine is as powerful as we give them credit for, or is it just that we admire them but we question their agenda to do the right thing not just the thing that makes them look good which can be mutually exclusive.

Giuliani's private sector success is based in part on the possibility that he is still a player. Therefore, he runs for whatever office is open, to keep the fantasy alive.

@daveyjonesisdead: I agree. Giuliani hasn't been a player in while. Even when he was running for President last year. Which is why his partnering with Palin would be the only player-making role he has, though I doubt her ego will allow that to happen effectively.

Come on, man. Giuliani is not going to run. That fucking lisping scumbag is just trying to drum up support for his shitty security company. As much as he loves to throw cold water on African-American firsts (stalking, then running against the first NYC mayor for years; that "comm-yeeew-nity organizer" thingie at the Convention), the asshole would have no goddam idea on how to deal with that disfunctional state legislature.

@ohnothimagain: Well, he can always ASK. But it defies belief to think that Bloomberg would even consider the Lt. Gov spot, or Comptroller, or anything other than Governor (or Senator, but I don't see him as 1 of 100). Do you have a cite, Mr. Belonsky?

But Cuomo's got a big problem. NYC politics, to state the obvious, is all about race, and Cuomo's already messed things up in that area. Of course Paterson should step aside, but (Smithy, back me up here) that's not how politicians behave (ie, rationally, in this type situation). I mean, what's in it for him, stepping aside so he doesn't lose? And Paterson's making noise about staying in and, more importantly, playing the race card left, right and center. That was a shot across Cuomo's bow.

As for the party, they can pressure Paterson to step aside, but they don't have the power to make him. And the obvious answer, a job in DC where he can't hurt anyone, would mean Obama appointing a very unpopular governor who is, well, black. Yikes.

I'm sure Cuomo's considerable ego will push him in. But this could get ugly.

@kneetoe: Yes, he pissed everyone off when he ran against McCall. Battling against another black man could be an issue. And I think there's a lot of Clinton fatigue in NYS - a lot of elected officials were forced to stay on board with her long after it was all over, including black officials who alienated their minority constituency doing so. My guess and prediction is: Paterson runs, Cuomo does not, Paterson beats his Republican opponent, who will not be Giuliani or Lazio.

Giuliani needs to run. He owes it to New York City.

He proclaimed himself a friend of police and fireman during 9/11, and then promptly shitted on them when it came time for a new contract. He disparaged NYC across the country when he was running for president. He illegally unsealed files to try to justify a police shooting. And, he is a pompous (e.g. America's Mayor) hypocritical (e.g. twice divorced, twice adulterating Catholic) dirtbag with terrible plastic surgery (hint: very few evil people look better once they get plastic surgery, even though not all people with bad plastic surgery are evil people).

An up-swell of anti-Giuliani sentiment on a public stage and the lost of his two companies is the least he deserves.

Most politicians have immense egos and are somewhat delusional. But the truly successful ones -- like Bill Clinton -- have a deep emotional need that forces them to look outward and relate to others.

As I wander around the city, I keep bumping into Giuliani -- on the street or in restaurants. He almost glows with a sort of pompous cockiness. The man still believes that his 9-11 induced popularity can translate into something larger. I thought what happened in Florida convinced him that wasn't so, but his vanity pushes him forward.

Of course he will run -- and Cuomo will beat him.

Because if he had simply replaced the antiquated "handie-talkie" radios that failed to work on 9/11, many of NYC's firefighters could have survived that day. Oh, and if you want to punch his shiny new veneers in, you could do that too.
