If I was a high school teacher, I would take Mr. Kristof's weekend piece and make it part of my discussion. He's over there. This is what he sees. I would offer some background to the topic/geography involved and then I would ask the hard question. What would YOU do to make it better?
He lives my dream and he offers his adventures to the rest of us to make of it what we will. And he really, really is a good man. He tries to right the wrongs. There is only good in that.
Boring? Apparently no one read his op-ed on salt yesterday.
Seriously, he is awesome. He was one of my favorite columnists during the campaign season, and I love that he calls attention to global and women's issues. It is nice to see sex trafficking and other violence against women being given attention and taken seriously in the mainstream media. I wouldn't have even known about the phenomenon of throwing acid in women's faces in Pakistan if is wasn't for his heart-wrenching article.
"I ordered my usual coffee and then later discovered I was in possession of a decaf. That was a relief to me since I was alarmed to find myself only having enough attention to do half of the day's crossword in the massive book of daily Oxford-level puzzles (I want to kiss mother everyday for that gift!). When I could barely focus on 33 Down, I paused and wondered whether I was getting a tumor or a sugar deficiency. Being faced with my mortality before 8AM was indeed jarring. Oh, and the tickets to the opera came in so that's good."
He is earnestly boring, but he did take that cute guy with him to Africa, and he's basically the only person with a national "platform" right now who seems to be truly outraged by things like Darfur, sex trafficking, and the like. Keep doing what you're doing, Nick!
@lawyergay: I had a friend who would always complain about the co-worker he had to share an office with. But the only specific examples of things she would do would always be like "She always says thank you" or "she calls her mom! and tells her that she lovers her!". This is how I feel about Kristof. He brings attention to terrible things happening that no one else mentions. But something in the way that he does it makes me kind of want to hate him.
The true downside - she now has no choice but to spend more with Nick Kristof, listening to him constantly talk about the plight of children in underdeveloped countries.
You know, there really isn't anything snarky I can think to say about these two. Nick Kristof is so pleasant, social-justice-oriented -- though with a little goofy-ness -- and she is really engaged with what she is talking about. They make an interesting and cute couple! (Disclaimer: I really like Kristof's columns. I'm in the tank!)
Also, I like how Charlie Rose asked Nick Kristof whether the Chinese believed themselves to be the "chosen people," and then Charlie Rose pauses for what seemed like an eternity before he said "people" recognizing the ambiguity of his word choice and trying to gauge whether anyone might take offense.

1) Cocooning/groupthink ("Everyone thinks this way, because we do.")
2) Snobbery/elitism ("Everyone thinks this is interesting, or ought to.")
3) Conflicts of interest/logrolling (What was the Spy feature? "Logrolling in Our Time"?)
4) Failures of news judgment/professional skepticism (From Judith Miller all the way down to Jennifer 8. Lee.)
I guess Kristof's apparent edgelessness is intended for category #2, huh?

Nick Kristof is not boring. But you know what is? Gossip Girl recaps. Seriously fuck you, Gawker.

But I'm a country boy, so it stands to reason that my favorite word would also be my favorite thing. But look at all these sophisticates around us!

My "fave" word of the day is fustigate.
As in, "I've been overcome by an intense desire to fustigate the crap out of Nick Kristof."

What a great interview.
