I've only driven through Iowa, but from what I can tell it's shaping up pretty nicely. Since it figured out how to start attracting high level business (for the midwest) with its over abundance of real estate, Iowa is now one of the only US states that can boast it is both in need of people with letters behind their name AND actively hiring, especially for those having technical backgrounds. It is also a hot bed for the renewable energy industry and R&D, which has actually given Iowa State University's chemistry and chemical engineering programs a top 20 listing, international respect and a lot of money from DOE. And now they're going to start attracting gays with college degrees!

@nonce: Yeah, but as a woman, there's also some places that I just do not go alone. On the whole, people in Iowa are a fairly reasonable, friendly bunch. Iowa and Wyoming aren't really at all similar, as Iowa is far more liberal, voting blue in 5 of the last 6 presidential elections. Wyoming has been red in all of those. Not a great comparison.

@nonce: Well, there are places in upstate New York you don't go if you're gay, too.

I don't want to minimize the evil of gay-bashing, because even if just one gay person is beaten up for their sexuality, that's too many, but the idea that most Midwesterners think that sort of thing is at all OK, or that it happens frequently, is ridiculous.

@Moff: No but gaybashing does happen a lot more frequently than we would like to think. I'm a lot more fearful (living in the midwest) of getting the shit beaten out of me than not being able to marry the bear I am too shy to snare.

That could very well just be me, but when assimilationists like Andrew Sullivan focus on marriage etc. at the expense of basic safety concerns, there's a problem. Not to get all Jezebel up in here. Gay marriage is great progress, if getting married is your kind of thing.

@nonce: But how do you do "basic safety concerns"? The only practical way I see is to reduce bigotry, by reducing stigma, by doing things like formalizing the treatment of gay people as normal human beings.

I dunno. I've never been gay in the Midwest, but in all the time I've spent in North Dakota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and the other states nearby, I just haven't seen a lot of physical violence in general. You do hear a lot more use of words like "homo" as a semi-jokey pejorative out here than in, like, New York, which is uncomfortable; but I think stuff like that creates more of a threatening atmosphere than is indicative that someone really wants to punch you.

But again, I dunno. Either way, I think it's clearly changing for the better.

@katastic: Iowa is like the best of the midwest. Parts of Ohio are like this too. Even the farm folk are pretty pragmatic. They don't care if you're gay; they just dislike absolutist assholes. Yes, there are some religious folk around who disagree; but most people take the love thy neighbor thing pretty seriously.
