i think in orleans parish you can still get 10 cents a nutria tail. not 100percent on that, but pretty sure.

@southernbitch: clarification: 10 cents per tail if you turn them in to a police station. my boyfriend's father used to do this to supplement his income.

    from a 2004 state report:
This program is funded by the Coastal Wetlands Planning,
Protection, and Restoration Act (CWPPRA). The objective is to increase the harvest of nutria in order to reduce damage to vegetation. A total of 332,596 nutria tails, worth $1,330,384 in incentive payments, were collected from 346 participants.

I love the two-step music in the background as the chef describes the nutrition properties in a filet of nutria..

You know they make lovely coats, if you don't mind wearing what is essentially large rat fur: [www.nutria.com]

Little bastards are eating their way through the Chesapeake Bay and destroying our habitats.

I say, shoot em' on sight. Nothing a little barbecue sauce won't fix.

The local WalMart has a sparrow problem, they've learned how to set off the door sensors and they head for the bird seed displays. This necessitates bringing in a sparrow hawk now and then to kill them.

Maybe they need a panther in this store to keep down the Nutria?

@WindowSeat: Not gators, you said crocodiles. There's a difference, i just can't remember what it was. I once went to an alligator farm while i lived in FL, you know, for the kitsch factor. With my luck, i found the one educationally redeeming alligator farm in the entire stinking state. Not that any of it penetrated. I was too distracted by the shellacked baby gator heads.

Maybe if Walmart would just stop their corporate bastardry - paying employees the minimum wage with no benefits, trading with China, vicious competitive practices, sexism and a decidedly anti-green policy, they wouldn't have a giant rat in one of their stores. It must be liberal karma, right?

Wake up. Every Walmart has a store nutria. Sam Walton wanted it that way.

Those actually are just giant effin' rats in New Jersey, not nutria. Don't let New Jersey fool you with its wishful thinking.
