If they object to the administration, why not just take their business elsewhere? There are TONS of schools that would be happy to take their transfer credits and their parents' money.
Tuition dollars at work, kiddies!

(Protesting over something you have the power to simply walk away from -- which will hurt the institution more than yourself -- is just LAME.)

The police just entered the building and are arresting the students.

The negative comments regarding any kind of protest that regularly appear on Gawker indicate that -- for all the so-called snarkiness -- a great many people in corporate America are against anyone who challenges the system.

Kerrey is a poor leader who needs to resign. I take off my hat to anyone who goes to jail for their beliefs -- even if only for a day.

@smithhimself: why don't you explain to me, in detail, kerrey's crimes, right here, and how they are somehow worse, more protest-worthy, and more worth our time than any number of bad shits happening right now all over the place and maybe then we can discuss "challenging the system" and going to jail for "beliefs", ok? a bunch of assholes wasting money on a glorified community college repeatedly attention-whoring themselves for a fake, pointless protest of a meaningless thing really doesn't impress me that much anymore, sorry.

@smithhimself: I've spent a lot of time in demonstrations and the odd picket line. I think street action is great, if well planned and focused. And I understand that a lot of people aren't happy with Kerrey's leadership (in fact, the New School has had problems with administration for years). I get pissed off at what seems to be sloppy tactics and vague demands on the part of the students. I hope nobody gets hurt. But, as I've been taught in civil disobedience training and union strike training, don't expect the cops to be very nice, especially if you don't have a demo permit.

Does the New School have anything relevant or unique to offer in terms of degrees, research facilities etc? I know it was founded on good principles way back, but I've never gotten a real idea of what it offered other than Continuing Ed classes a step above Learning Annex. And it's expensive to boot. Why live in NY and go anywhere but CUNY, unless you're loaded?

@Some Assembly Required: You still need half a brain to get into NYU. I'm guessing the New School is one of those places that only requires your daddy's check to clear. That goes for Parsons, too, though for that you need both a check and a portfolio.

@SarahHeartburn: Not true! Parsons, Mannes, Eugene Lang and the Graduate Faculty offer stellar academics. The "Learning Annex" classes at the new school are for the adult education programs. They have nothing to do with the degree seeking programs. I got a great education at Euegene Lang and the Graduate Faculty but I really didn't dig all the overpriviledged protesting and hunger strikes.

@kitkatsplash: I've been looking at the Web page and I didn't realize Mannes and Parsons were affiliated. And I know people who were happy with some degree programs, especially returning adults.

By the way, don't miss the fun and hi-jinks on the comments on the Time's City Room post on this story. For example:

"These children need to learn how to properly protest, gain leverage and negotiate. My 5 year old engaged in this behavior when she was 3. Not any more.

These immature adults are nothing more than terrorists and should be treated as such. I would use a smoke bomb or a percussion bomb and then drag those terrorist out. If they resist physically, I would Taser them."

Ooo, do you have a screenshot of the big sign they draped across the building that said, "OCCUPY"? I'm just saying, if you're really serious about this whole drama-whoring revolution shouldn't you really know that the word is "OCCUPIED," as in present tense. Otherwise you just look like you're asking a question. And while that's albeit true for a bunch of meaning-starved, mockumentary viewing, (must have tale of NYC uprising to tell high school buddies that went to state schools) jackholes, it kinda defeats the purpose.
