@jakeyoungblood: Because children already get the day off from school, for goodness sake. If you gave people the day off as well then single mothers might, for one sliver of a day, not remember that they are expected to suffer twice as much as the childless or their stay-at-home peers. If we find ways to make life a little less punishing for single moms, and for parents in general, people might start having good childhoods. And then there would be no more denial-steeped audience for escapist entertainment that subliminally sells unnecessary consumerism and so there would be no more good TV and no more economy and we'd all have to pass the time reading stories on sad, young, literary blogs written by people who imagine that true sadness, if they could only afford it, would feel like living inside a poem about lovesongs.

And then one of our accountants just asked if I voted, and I said yes, and he said, "If you voted for Obama, I hope you lose!" And then he laughed.
True story.

With any luck they haven't safeguarded your clock against the time-honored institution of the buddy punch.
At any rate, my sympathies.

But seriously, that does suck. Ignore the haters - they get mean when things don't appear to be going their way.
