Newspapers =/= journalism.
I thought we established this on this site already, doesn't this guy read Gawker?

Journalists exercise power. Ideally, they exercise that power on behalf of the powerless. If they know nothing about what it is like to be powerless themselves, they may come to exercise their considerable power on behalf of the already powerful.
Eat a dick, Tennis. I'm sure journalism would SOOOO much better if only trust fund babies could enter the field.

He's saying young journalists shouldn't expect stable employment so that they can experience "powerlessness."
In reality, though, most of us really do need to put food on the table and pay the electric bill. That leaves the rich kids who can rely on mom and dad to support them in their journalism adventure. It's a step back in the direction of the low pay/high prestige dynamic that a certain class of rich people find so alluring about journalism.
