Curious. Anyone know why there would be such a huge spike in google searches for "Mechanical Turk" today? (ref. the link to googletrends above)
There is a single item dated today in google news results that refers to the Mechanical Turk. It in turn refers to a Businessweek article that came out a few weeks ago. To be number one at the top of google trends would require either a huge natural frenzy of activity caused by one or more article or mentions. TV or Radio perhaps?
(The comment that I was referring to above, I think, lovingly described Nouriel Roubini as "The Mechanical Turk." Can't seem to find it using the search dealibob uptop).
I never shop at old navy, because it's cheap crap that never fits (I'm a guy, and they expect us to be huge, boxy, and not give a shit about what we put on our backs) but today I actually went in and bought 2 pairs.
I expected pandemonium, but it was pretty smooth and quick. The worker who rang me out said they already abandoned most of the rules because people were coming back in to buy more, doing separate transactions and all kinds of time wasting nonsense.
And yes normally a pair is $3.50 or 2 for $5 as the tag read. Made the whole sale really seem silly to wait any extended period of time for.
@laughingweek: I think I own four of their $5 t-shirts (they're $7.50 in store, $5 online, and I have a mix of both). They get the job done, and I've had a couple of them for about six years, in regular rotation, so they can't be that poor in quality.
I paid $30 for a My Bloody Valentine t-shirt at their show earlier in the year, and the $5 Old Navy shirts crush that thing in quality.
I stepped foot into Old Navy my freshman year at University of Hartford in Fall of 1994 and bought a pair of boxers. They basically disintegrated my 1st time wearing them. I have never purchased anything from Old navy since then.
Last month I got a coupon for $50 off a $100 purchase at Old Navy by playing a game on their website. I shopped there for an hour before realizing there was no damn way I could find $100 worth of stuff I wanted at Old Navey.
@TedSez: I always find stuff like this funny - are you so elitist that generic goods are below you? You couldn't find socks or underwear? tshirts, shorts? No hats? No mittens? Nothing that would work for you? You can't be a parent b/c Old Navy is fantastic for kids stuff.
@Charlotte Rae's Web: Yes, that's right, I went into Old Navy with a coupon because I'm elitist. But I couldn't find the brie-scented yachting suits with gold trim, so Muffy and I ran out of there as fast as our Topsiders could carry us.
I like Old Navy flip-flops and I'm actually wearing a pair right now as I sit in my jammies. But even at full price, they're about maybe $5. Are we really this hard-up as a nation?
Has anyone seen those new Old Navy commercials where they insinuate that one of the creepy mannequins that now haunt my dreams is pregnant? Why would they want to imply that wearing their clothes would make you look pregnant?
"Maybe she's having a baby! Or maybe the cheaply made clothes she's wearing make her look like a fat-ass! Come find out for yourself!"
