While Beck is an idiot, his point in this case, while badly made, has some validity. The Vancouver Olympics are already overbudget and the promise that the taxpayers wouldn't be on the hook for it is already crumbling.
The argument that it brings in lots of economic benefits is specious to some degree because most of the money goes to transient or foreign businesses, while putting a drain on longterm economics and, yes, sticking a sizable part of the bill to the public who pays whether they benefit or not.
As someone notes, Montreal got stuck with a billion dollars of debt which wasn't paid down until decades later... and I can bet the people who got some benefits from the games, and then scuttled off back to the US or other provinces didn't stick around to *pay* their share either.
Hey, the Olympics have been held in the US several times *recently*, and they've never been in Brazil or even South America. I'm sure Chicago wanted it, but hey, there's always 2020! (I'm sure that being born in Rio de Janeiro has nothing to do with my sentiments. ;p)
While I understand that the Olympics bring a lot of revenue to the host city, I can't possibly be the only one who panicked like a motherfucker when New York thought about hosting for one split second a while back?
This would be my absolute nightmare. Take an already crowded city and crowd it up some more, clog the streets with more traffic, and add more chaos to an already busy city?
Also, I saw what happened to Athens after the Olympics and it's quite sad. So many millions of dollars spent on new infrastructure that they don't even use anymore and now the citizens are going to be paying this burden off forever in taxes.
The whole poetry and myth of the place, the whole "city of the big shoulders" thing (and, by extension, America), now sadly superceded, less relevant in a century ready to be illuminated by BRIC economies and culture. Yet an interesting place to visit, still (maybe fourteenth on a new Chinese billionaire's list of must-visit cities).
Did it occur to anyone that the IOC is a bunch of asshole? Still waiting for Barck to say something about the kid who was beaten to death in some Chicago project for being too smart. Which apparently translayed as "white" in their part of town.
Win some, lose some. It's perfectly reasonable that the US wasn't chosen on top of Salt Lake City and Atlanta, for fucks sake. It's an international event.
And it's perfectly reasonable for the President to do a quick flight to Europe to help his country land the games, whether the decision--no doubt made weeks ago--went in the US's favor or not.
That said, one has to wonder how conservatives will be able to convince voters they're actually for America--economically, and in matters like this--after rooting against it for the next four to eight years.
With cretins like Cheney rooting for a terrorist attack and asshats like these gloating on America losing out at the IOC, there's little doubt, as usual, that their highest allegiance is to party.
@OpheliaCharon: I'm going to call bullshit on that and point to every major league franchise in every major sport. What conservatives enjoy is making taxpayers spend their money for the enjoyment of rich, asshole conservatives.
No grief for me... although somebody told me that it would cause the el to get way fixed up, which would be nice. And I kind of wanted to go watch swimming.
I suppose Dennis Miller is here asked to comment as a successful NFL commentator?
As for Barack Obama, what's the point of the president showing up to support his city, when everyone knows that the US government is the only government that wouldn't finance the games? Chicago would be much better off with Donald Trump or Paul Allen showing up. You know, the people who really run this country.

No thanks. Good luck, Rio.

What conservatives enjoy is keeping the money that they work hard for, not squandering it for the perceived glory of hosting a sports competition.

He's got the same, (make a horrible remark a joke by chuckling at the end) shtick as Ann Coulter. However Dennis is much, much less relevant.
