Or is NASCAR the opera of the arts world? Because driving around in circles for 4 hours on purpose makes about as much sense as singing after someone stabs you.
That's not what Tommasini at the Times said (and he has a better ear than pretty much anyone). "If there were cheers among the jeers, they were drowned out."
Also - this the NYT seems determined to turn this into an amazing opera cat fight and tracked down Zeffirelli in Rome just for this quote - "He’s not second rate. He’s third rate," Mr. Zeffirelli said [regarding Luc Bondy]"
I believe Julie Taymor was the set designer. Wwhile I loved when she directed Titus, and it's one of my favorite movies for its visuals alone, if Die Zauberflote is any indication I can understand they revolt to this re-design.
Wait, I may have just stepped into another one of these less than serious conversations with a comment that was meant to be taken seriously.
NASCAR of the snooty, for sure. But in NASCAR the fans don't backstabbingly savage each other while pretending to be the most enlightened about their art (sadly).
I'd pay top-dollar for a ticket if Al Gore, wearing a toga, belted out the entire opera while doing his Armageddon PowerPoint and swigging bottles of his beloved Heineken.
McClatchy must not have seen Minghella's Madame Butterfly which is all Hollywood (though it does suck, that is Puccini's fault. Minghella can only really be blamed for the weird little puppets).
And as strange as this opera sounds, Doctor Atomic is an opera about the creation of the atomic bomb with a libretto composed entirely from texts written or being read by the atomic scientists at the time. And it is really, really good.

Sam Watterson in Hannah and her Sisters: "I have a private box at the Met. bring my bottle of wine, I watch and I cry. Disgusting."
Exactly.

Secret: it wasn't that big a leap.
As for catty - trust me, the real cattiness and fun could be overheard in the chorus dressing rooms.
