It's entertaining (and pretty easy) to make fun of the NYT and newspapers in general. But the crickets you heard chirping in this segment will be chirping on The Daily Show, FOX, and Rush Limbaugh's daily vent if newspapers go away. You think ANY of these shows are going to do ANY of their own reporting? What are these talking heads gonna have to talk about once the Grey Lady and her ilk go under?

And don't say "bloggers will fill the void" -- I call bullshit.

@doubletalk: I love blogs, and read them all day long, but even the very best link constantly to stories in newspapers that were dug up by old-fashioned reporting methods, something most of them still don't do and don't know how to do.

This segment made the Daily Show look like doucehbags. No matter how pretentious, irritating and smug the NYT can be, they still perform an essential service--the actual reporting of news by people paid to go into the field and cover this stuff. If these guys go down--the only ones left are the unpaid interns and media flacks at HuffPo and similar sites.

The major old print media did badly, as did television news, in the lead up to Bush II's Iraqi War, so I see some real problems with them, primarily fat and complacent and in bed with the people they are supposed to cover. But you need money, and training, and ethical commitment to cover stuff like Watergate and the Pentagon Papers (I know so long ago). I looked at Talking Points, it's nice, but of the major articles, one is AP, one is a link to the Washington Post, one on Coleman Senate battle is under a staff by-line but seems identical to news floating around out there, and one on the Holocaust shooter, under a staff's name, does appear to contain original content. But this is not the same as what old well funded print media should, and used, to do. I worry about the press's ability to be the brake and to hold government accountable in the new digital era. I will examine the others later.

@SanjivaniChrysippus: the problem is that the general public does not demand journalistic excellence because most of them assume the paper is biased one way or another to begin with.

there's a lot of reasons, self-inflicted and otherwise, on how this erosion of public trust occurred over the years, but i blame hyperpartisanship.

Once again, proof that people who don't actually watch Stewart and Colbert, but think they know the show from a few on-line clips shouldn't play with fire. I'm sure the Times let The Daily Show in thinking that such a moved showed themselves to be "cool" and "hip" and that such a "liberal-leaning show" would be kind to them.

@elinorwhyme: No--I DON'T think they watch The Daily Show. That's obvious from the interview. They think they know The Daily Show from some clips they've seen on line. These are older guys who probably "don't have time for television" or The Daily Show is something "their adult kids watch." They knew The Daily Show like the Bush White House knew Colbert "was the conservative answer to Stewart." They were expecting a softball interview from friendly folks. Very sad.

@elinorwhyme: I'm always astounded by how many guests on these shows--esp Colbert--appear to have no idea what they've gotten themselves in for. Even if you don't watch it, once they contact you, look it the fuck up. Jeez.

This was a great package. I'm seriously wondering what Catherine Mathis and staff were thinking letting these guys in. If it was to show they had a sense of humor, well, they should've at least media-trained Keller and Berke first. I get the feeling the folks at the Post or the News would've handled it better.
