Actually the Pre doesn't exist. It's a dumb display with speaker and microphone connected to a laptop PC and wired telephone concealed in the Palm reps clothing. That's why they can't let go of it.
I'm not the best guy at making predictions but from what I've seen so far, Palm's Pre will be a flop. I was a long time Palm user (started using Palm with their PDAs in 2000 or so) but I switched to an iPhone when it came out. iPhone 3 does everything that Pre was claiming it will do and does it better. And it also has thousands of apps to go with it.
If I had few million $$$ in the bank, I'd stat shorting Palm. It will be bloodbath!
Me thinks the Pre is POS. They're worried that someone who can truly take the phone on a test spin would quickly reveal all it's warts. A no-nothing like Stern is the perfect test subject since he will just ooh and ahh over the shiny object.
I don't see men buying it. Look at it. It's a chick phone if there ever was one. Just imagine bedazzled.
A *nix kernel and Palm's years of experience? Plus Palm OS emulation for 1000's of apps? Multitasking?
iPhone killer? No. But it will fit neatly somewhere between the iPhone, the Curve/Bold, and the Windows and Android devices - taking a little marketshare from all of them, RIM most of all, I'd think.
At least when Apple pre-announced a phone, they had a price, a charging connector that already existed in the millions*, and a ship date.
Very bold move by Palm - but I think it will ultimately prove to be as foolish as letting their lead in PDAs peter out in the late 90s.
*Can someone please tell me if there's an optional wired charging connector at all, or if you'll have to find the magic wireless odd-shaped electricity god altar thingy every time your battery gets low?
Palm's new whatever might actually be interesting, exciting, revolutionary, but there's one small problem -- You can't actually buy one! Like, right now. They say sometime in the first half of 2009, as if they expect someone excited about a getting great new phone to wait six whole months. When Jobs announces, it's ready to roll. Is this so difficult to understand?
