That's sort of what I'm feeling now.

So: heh. She's out.

"Well I think it's great that Americans are able to choose one way or the other. We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. You know what, in my country, in my family, I do believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, no offense to anybody out there. But that's how I was raised and I believe that it should be between a man and a woman."
That's "bashing" or "hateful?" Or is it "bashing" and "hateful" to be ridiculed about your faith after being lured into an obviously loaded question? Call me crazy, but it seems to me she was just stating an opinion.
Again, it's not like she is running for office - unlike Barack Obama or Gavin Newsom...both of whom oppose same-sex marriage (Newsom, interstingly, supported Prejean after the firestorm).
06/10/09
Is this hateful?
"We live in a land where you can choose same-race marriage or opposite-race marriage. You know what, in my country, in my family, I do believe that marriage should be between a white man and a white woman, no offense to anybody out there. But that's how I was raised and I believe that it should be between a white man and a white woman."
It's the same exact thing, and trying to argue otherwise is bullshit.
I'm so sick of this leniency we give to anti-gay bigots because it's been codified that it's OK to be homophobic (because, I guess, what? It's weird and gross?). You know? It's not OK. It's the same thing as being a racist. Fuck religion. Ancient fairy tales should have no bearing on how my government treats me.
And while Ms. Prejean loved to crow about how there's a "choice," there she was representing a state that had just robbed that choice from a large swath of the population. It's disgusting and backwards and hateful. Frankly.

Your race discrimation = sexual orientation analogy is lazy. For the record, I support same-sex marriage, but I also support people being able to have religious views that differ with others. But you don't, so that's cool. I won't bash you for it :)

Also:
"Like, has she been out there saying she hates homosexuals or something?"
Sentiments like that really make me angry. She DIRECTLY SAID that she does not feel that, legally (the question she answered was about legal, government-sanctioned marriage), same sex couples should have the same rights as heterosexual couples. That is bigoted and exclusive--it is treating a group of people who've no control over their identity anymore than any other minority does as second class citizens.
People can't hide behind "Ohhh it's just my opinion!" about gays any more than they can couch racism in any sort of "freedom of opinion." It should not be tolerated, not in this country, not in 2009.
Sorry, that ship has sailed. Either get your mind right, or get out the way and go fester in your own prejudices somewhere else, so real adults and real Americans can go about undoing bedrock injustices.
06/10/09
This is vastly different than the question of whether gay marriage should be legal or not. Again, stating an opinion about a right does not constitute that person blocking that right.
Your fight is with politicians (eg. Obama, who opposes same sex marriage). Not Carrie Prejean.
06/10/09
You should take a look at Prejean's participation in the ads for the National Organization for Marriage before you glibly dismiss Richard's accurate "gay marriage bashing" remark.
Anyway, this is not about censorship and it isn't about freedom of religion — Carrie Prejean is welcome to hold any backward-thinking, retrogressive, destructive opinion or belief she likes, and she is entirely welcome to a shitstorm of criticism for having the gall to publicly decry the attempts of her fellow Americans to achieve equality under the law.
Oh, also, the straw man invocation of Obama's stance on gay marriage is not just deceitful, empty rhetoric, it's also increasingly boring.
06/10/09
@PontiusPirate: No, because there a general sense that we should take a backseat. And, really organically, it's not right. When we are treated equally in front of a judge as Ms. Prejean, when she drunkenly marries a stranger in Vegas, then we'll be quiet.
Carrie Prejean, PUBLIC PERSON (Prejean is really weird to type) articulated a position, in public, about something. I don't think someone, articulating that an attack on America would be good, would be greeted with the same enthusiasm or job opportunities.
Yes, she is not setting policy, but she's also not anonymous.
06/10/09
In the end, we're still attacking a beauty pageant runner-up for expressing her opinion about gay marriage, but Obama and Gavin Newsom (who hold more power obviously) get off scott-free when they oppose gay marriage. Which, according to you is a boring point to make.
If you hold Carrie Prejean's views as more important than your politicians (and what she does with NOM), then I guess that speaks volumes about really how serious this issue is in your eyes.
06/10/09
As for Gavin Newsom, the man who issued California's first same-sex marriage licenses, you're going to have to provide a lot more concrete evidence than just your word to back that claim up. On May 26 of this year, he wrote a piece for the Huffington Post in support of marriage equality. When did his opinion change?
As for my opinion on Carrie Prejean's views, you are once again painstakingly missing the forest for the trees. As I stated above, I don't care what she believes, but I am just as entitled to state my opinion about her as she is of me.
06/10/09
Bringing up politician's views on gay marriage is about as manipulative as claiming indifference to Carrie Prejean's views immediately after pointing me towards her work with NOM.
When you say it's not about censorship and religion, you're clearly leaving no room for discussion.

"We live in a land where you can choose same-race white marriage or opposite-race jew marriage."
Not cool!
This is a handy tool

But it's clear that the only move you know is to cite the words of Obama and Biden. It's a weightless and perfunctory gambit — sound and fury, signifying nothing — but you're not coming up with anything new, so what's the point of continuing anyway?
06/11/09
IFILL: Let's try to avoid nuance, Senator. Do you support gay marriage?
BIDEN: No. Barack Obama nor I support redefining from a civil side what constitutes marriage. We do not support that. That is basically the decision to be able to be able to be left to faiths and people who practice their faiths the determination what you call it.
Isn't it sad when you know the highest law in the land will never be on your side.
Disclosure:I am the child of a gay parent who has been in a LTR w/a partner for over 15 years, have many friends who are gay, and have even been in relationships w/some people who are gay.

Now she'll be relegated to the off-highway Nevada brothel where she belongs, and halfway through her lap dances she'll begin to cry 'I used to be a Queen!!!' into the shoulders of flaccid, belching truckers who will then beat her up, thinking she meant she used to be a gay man.
Then she'll know how it feels.
